Reading Essays Reading a Book: Fan Deng's Reading Method

There is no doubt that reading has many benefits. I have also read articles written by many people, telling us that "there is a golden house in the book and Yan Ruyu in the book". Reading can not only increase knowledge, but also broaden our horizons and improve the pattern. However, Fan Deng tells us from different angles in Reading a Book: Fan Deng's Reading Method that reading is more beneficial than simply reading.

First, reading is a vulnerable weapon for the public.

Fan Deng gave an example in his book. A Syrian who grew up in Beijing told him that listening to other people's books is a unique way of reading in his country, because Syrians basically don't read much, and the average reading volume is only five pages. Insufficient reading has also become one of the reasons for the disaster in this country, including terrorist organizations or unstable factors.

A nation without culture, a nation that can only know the world through the words and deeds of others, as Fan Deng said, they have not established a basic scientific outlook and critical thinking, and they do not know that the world is diversified. They seem to lack the ability to put themselves in their shoes and see the world from multiple angles.

However, although reading is very important, the threshold of reading is much higher than listening to books. Even in some developed countries and cities, reading is a "luxury" and a habit of a few people. In contrast, this reading method of listening to other people's books is much simpler. With more knowledge, wider horizons and larger patterns, the ability to resist vulnerability will naturally increase.

I have two divorced friends. One of them overheard a book about "Origin and Fate" one day, and suddenly realized the cause of the problems between their husband and wife, so she quickly pulled herself together and got out of the shadow of marriage failure. Another friend is sighing and complaining all day, and he is several years older in just one month.

Second, reading makes us change from a "one-dimensional person" to a "multi-dimensional person".

The thinking system of "multidimensional man" has three pillars: fact, logic and critical thinking. Such people have both the rational ability to create a better life and the perceptual ability to enjoy a better life. Simply put, they can turn what they read into the ability to deal with life problems, because reading can make their thinking more open, their logic more rigorous and their perspective more comprehensive.

Let's take my two divorced friends as an example. Friends who had an epiphany because they overheard a book began to study consciously. She only read a lot of books related to the problem of family background, so she can think about herself outside her personal circle.

She found that her ex-husband was wrong, and she was not without problems. In fact, many things in life are not right or wrong at all, but two people have different perspectives and handling methods. Now she has made up with her ex-husband and found a man who is willing to tolerate and love her unconditionally.

Another friend, who doesn't like reading, abruptly turned herself into "Sister Xianglin". When she saw that everyone had only one topic and criticized her ex-husband, she decided that the divorced middle-aged woman would never be happy again in her life and would not listen to anyone's advice.

Third, "storytelling" is the most efficient immersion learning method.

Immersion learning is a goal-oriented learning method that gives full play to people's subjective initiative. On the contrary, sightseeing study has no goal, only procedures, but no fun. Fan Deng believes that storytelling is a strong immersion learning, which can exercise a person's sense of ownership.

We often feel this way when we are reading, and then we forget it after reading it. But if we need to tell others after reading it, should we sort out the context of this book and find out what it wants to convey?

When we can tell this book, 80% of the contents will not be forgotten. In the long run, our knowledge and learning will form a cycle, brain neurons will establish connections, and the brain will undergo qualitative changes.
