Farewell (songs by John Pond Ordway and Li Shutong)
Farewell, the tune is selected from the American song Dreaming of Home and Mother composed by John P. Odway. Dreaming of home and mother is an "artist's song", which was popular in America in the late19th century. It is led by a white actor who painted his face, playing a black man, and the music is written in the style of black songs. Aodewei is the leader of "Aodewei Artists Group" and has written many artists' songs.
During Li Shutong's stay in Japan, Ningen, a Japanese lyricist, wrote a lyric entitled "The Sorrow of Travel" with the melody of dreaming about home and mother. Li Shutong's farewell, written in 19 15, was adapted from Ningen's travel sadness.
Li Shutong is an enlightenment pioneer in the history of modern songs in China. Li Shutong, who accepted the European music culture, brought some ready-made European song tunes and wrote his own lyrics.
The first published version of Farewell can be found in Fifty Famous Songs of China edited by Qiu Menghui and Feng Zikai. This book includes 13 songs composed by Li Shutong. 1927 was published by Ming Kai Bookstore in August.
