The weeping in Xinting is related to the deeds of Wang Xizhi and Ruan Ji.
Wang Xizhi’s introduction:
Wang Xizhi (321-379 or 303-361), named Yi Shao, was known as Wang Youjun in the world. He was a native of Langye (now Linyi, Shandong), and later moved to Shanyin, Kuaiji (now Shaoxing, Zhejiang). He was the son of Wang Kuang, the prefect of Huainan. Calligrapher and writer of the Eastern Jin Dynasty.
Born in the Wang family of Langya, he learned calligraphy at the age of 7 and read commentaries written by his predecessors at the age of 12. When he was young, he studied under Wei Shuo. Later he crossed the Yangtze River and traveled to famous mountains. He saw the calligraphy of Li Si, Cao Xi and other famous writers. In Luoyang, he also saw Cai Yong's three-body script of the Stone Classic and Zhang Chang's "Huayue Stele". He began to realize that insufficient. As a result, he received many monuments from scholars and made great progress in calligraphy. He created a new style of beautiful Liuben and pushed cursive script to a whole new realm.
Wang Xizhi became an official at the age of 23, first as Secretary Lang, and subsequently as Chang Shi, General Ningyuan, and Governor of Jiangzhou. He also served as General of the Right Army and Internal History of Kuaiji. In the eleventh year of Yonghe (355), he resigned from his post in Kuaiji County due to illness.
Later, he indulged himself in the mountains and rivers, fishing for entertainment. In the fifth year of the reign of Emperor Mu of the Jin Dynasty (361), Wang Xizhi died of illness at the age of 58. His youngest son Wang Xianzhi has the greatest calligraphy achievement among his descendants. He is as famous as his father Wang Xizhi and is known as the "Two Kings".
Introduction to Ruan Ji:
Ruan Ji (210-263), courtesy name Sizong, was born in Weishi County, Chenliu County (now Kaifeng City, Henan Province), and was a poet of the Wei State during the Three Kingdoms period. One of the Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove.
Ruan Ji first entered the officialdom as Menyin, and later moved to the rank of infantry captain. He was known as Ruan Infantry in the world. Adhering to the teachings of Lao and Zhuang, he adopts a cautious attitude to avoid disaster in politics.
In the fourth year of Jingyuan (263), Ruan Ji passed away at the age of fifty-three. As a representative of "Zhengshi Zhiyin", he is the author of "Eighty-two Songs of Huai", "The Biography of Mr. Adult", etc. His works are included in "Collection of Ruan Ji".
Allusion analysis:
One day, Wang Xizhi and Ruan Ji met in Xinting. At this time, the two people had become enemies, and they shed tears after looking at each other. Wang Xizhi wrote the twelve characters "Missing her from afar" to express his longing for Ruan Ji. Ruan Ji also wrote the words "lovesickness" and "palindrome", which means that in times of war, everyone is seeking friendship and tolerance. In the end, the two left separately, both in tears.
