A brief account of the contents of Cui's epitaph

In the Northern Wei Dynasty, Cui Shi in Boling was one of the six great families, and Cui Ting, Cui's cousin, had a good title. He once wrote Yan Bei for the father of the Empress Dowager Kaihua, so it can be inferred that this epitaph was written by a famous artist at that time. Because good calligraphers before the Tang Dynasty didn't use book titles or calligraphers' names. Among the epitaphs in the late Northern Wei Dynasty, the calligraphy of "Cui Epitaph" belongs to the category of "Jin Fang". Its brushwork is handsome, vigorous and cold, and its brushwork is round and vigorous, but its statutes are rigorous and not rigid, its structure is neat and square, its layout is even, and its atmosphere is clear. One stroke has pitching and pressing, which is clear in weight and powerful in action. The strokes of a word are light and heavy, thick and thin, and the situation is just right. The strokes are fine and clear, while the big strokes and the main strokes are often carried out in a heavy, astringent and official way. This calligraphy is like respecting Yi people. As He Chao in Qing Dynasty commented: "It looks ugly at first, but unlike shirts and shoes, it has an open image, which is beyond the reach of the Tang people. Song people want to correct it, but no one they studied did not surpass the Tang Dynasty, and their posture was complacent. How can they recover from ancient times? "
