One day, Master Daoxuan asked Heaven and Man about the origin of Guanyin Bodhisattva, and Heaven and Man told Daoxuan: Once upon a time, there was a solemn king whose queen was Mrs. Baoying. They gave birth to three princesses, princess royal named Miao Yan, the second named Miao Yin, and Sangong called Miao Shan. Avalokitesvara bodhisattva came into the world at the beginning, showing herself as Miaoshan, solemn princess and princess.
The most popular among the people in China is Guan Daosheng, the wife of Zhao Mengfu (1254- 1322), a great calligrapher of the Yuan Dynasty, who wrote A Brief Introduction to Avalokitesvara in the decade of Dade in the Yuan Dynasty (1306). In this book, the life experience of avalokitesvara is described completely.
Long ago, there was a king named Miao Zhuang. He had three daughters. The eldest daughter's name is Miao Yin, the second daughter is Miaoyuan, and the third daughter is Miaoshan.
When the three daughters grew up, Miao Yin and Miao Yuan got married according to their father's wishes. Princess Wei Miaoshan disobeyed her father's orders, refused to marry and decided to become a monk. King Miao Zhuang repeatedly persuaded Princess Miaoshan not to change her mind. King Miao Zhuang was very angry, demoted Princess Miaoshan as a commoner and drove her out of the palace. From then on, Princess Miaoshan went to Xiangshan to become a monk.
Later, King Miao Zhuang became seriously ill. After a long period of treatment, he was dying. At this time, Princess Miaoshan has become an immortal. When she heard that her father was dying, she became an old monk to treat King Miao Zhuang. After feeling her pulse, she told King Miao Zhuang that only by grasping the hands and eyes of her immediate family could she be cured.
King Miao Zhuang thought Miao Yin and Miao Yuan's two daughters were the most obedient relatives, so he ordered them to show their eyes. But neither daughter wants to. So Princess Miaoshan asked her father to send ministers to Xiangshan to ask the fairy for help. When the minister sent by the king arrived in Xiangshan, Princess Miaoshan cut off her hands and eyes and gave them to the minister to take back to the king.
King Miao Zhuang went to Xiangshan after his illness to thank the immortal, only to find that his daughter Miao Shan saved him. King Miao Zhuang was very sad when he saw that his daughter had no hands and eyes. He begged heaven and earth, knelt down to the ground, and begged the god of heaven and earth to help her recover her hands and eyes. God was moved by Princess Miaoshan's filial piety, which made Princess Miaoshan grow thousands of eyes. This is the story of Yan Baoxiang, a avalokitesvara bodhisattva with thousands of hands and eyes.
