8. Fuyan Temple in Hengshan, Hunan Province
April 2007
Fuyan Temple, located at the eastern foot of the stone peak, is one of the top ten jungles of Buddhism. This is well known in the history of Buddhism in China. It is a famous Buddhist resort of the southern Sect of Zen Buddhism and is now a key cultural relic protection unit in Hunan Province.
According to Nanyue, Fuyan Temple was originally named prajna temple, also known as Prajna Paramita. It was founded by Hui Si, the Buddhist Zen master of Tiantai Sect, in the first year of Chen Guangda (AD 567), and it is one of the oldest famous temples in Nanyue. Emperor Taizong once donated 50 volumes of Sanskrit to the temple for collection. In the second year of the Tang Dynasty (AD 7 13), after the Zen master was sent to Nanyue, prajna temple was turned into a Zen Dojo. Through the teachings of his disciple Zen Master Yi Dao, the Buddhism of "Epiphany" in Nanzong spread all over the world, and Buddhists all over the world used this temple as a Buddhist temple to lecture, which shows its prominent position in Nanzong. During the Taiping and Xingguo years of the Northern Song Dynasty (1976 to 1984), he served as the abbot of the temple. He led monks, planted pine and fir trees around the temple, rebuilt and expanded the temple, and renamed prajna temple "Fuyan Temple".
The temple is built on the mountain and covers an area of about four acres. The whole building is a brick-wood structure. The quadrangle is the mountain gate, the living room, the Yue Temple, the Ursa Major Hall and the ancestral hall in turn. The first entrance is the mountain gate. Hongqiangwei Temple, northeast of the mountain gate. The door is engraved with "Imperial Court in the World", and there are couplets on both sides: "Six Dynasties Ancient Temple; Qizu Dojo. " The second entrance is the living room, and the gate is due east. The pillars are engraved with couplets: "Yan Fu is the first ancient temple in Nanshan; Prajna is the only way for the bodhi old zu. " Couplets clarify the history and status of temples. The third step is the statue of Yue. There is a statue of Yue in the temple. According to "South Vietnam", "Worship Yue. Bronze cast 13 thousand Jin, built by three Buddhas, will last forever. " Huang Tingjian, a great poet and calligrapher in the Song Dynasty, said in The Journey to the West: "There is a bronze statue of Luna". The temples here are unconventional. There is no God of the Four Heavenly Kings, but there is a God of Yue. According to the Records of South Vietnam, it is said that Master Huisi played chess with Luna at that time, and defeated Luna, thus winning this treasure house of incense. In order to thank the moon god for his kindness in sending the land, he specially built a temple in the temple as a place for the moon god to stay and enjoy the incense on earth. Therefore, there is a statue of Yue. The fourth entrance is the Hall of Ursa Major. This Buddhist temple was originally dedicated to three bronze sitting buddhas cast by Chen Houzhu, but it no longer exists. The Buddha statue on the Lotus Platform was reshaped in 1984. Along the stone steps on both sides behind the Hall of the Great Hero, there is the fifth entrance. There are three halls, namely, ancestral hall, abbot and dharma hall. There is a gold plaque hanging on the altar, which reads the words "Five leaves leave fragrance". According to Tongguang Lu, after the sudden emergence of the "epiphany method" of Huineng, the sixth ancestor of Zen Buddhism, Nanzong was founded, which was vigorously promoted by Huaiyang and Qingyuan, the seventh ancestor. Nanzong was all the rage and flourished from the Five Dynasties to the late Tang Dynasty. South Vietnam gave up a Ministry, and by the way, Luyang School and Lin Ji School were formed. Since Stone moved to Nanyue, Qingyuan School has formed Cao Dongzong, Yunmen School and Fayan School. In this way, there are five cases of southern Zen. In the history of Buddhism, it is called "one flower with five leaves". The "Five Leaves" all originated in South Vietnam, and the followers of France spread all over the world. Among them, Lin Ji and Cao Dongzong are the most prosperous. Known as "pro-world, half Cao" reputation. And Lin Ji and Cao Dong. Originated in Nanyue, it is the holy land of "Jidong Cave Source". Therefore, the seven ancestors of Zen Buddhism have the reputation of "five-leaf flow".
On both sides of the temple are meditation rooms. Zhai Tang, a native of Ji Xiang. The promenade connects the whole temple, patchwork and seamless. Outside the right gate of the temple, there is an ancient ginkgo with a history of 1400 years. According to legend, Hui Si, a Buddhist monk, was ordained and converted to Buddhism. Three ancient ginkgo trees in the mountain gate were expelled from the temple because they violated Buddhist rules.
