Mr. Wang said: I can't learn. Green is taken from blue, and green is blue; Ice, water, but colder than water. The wood is straight in the rope. Think of it as a wheel, and its curve is in the rules. Although there is a crisis, those who stop coming forward will make it happen. Therefore, the wood is straight by the rope, the gold is sharp, the gentleman is knowledgeable, and he saves himself every day, so he knows clearly without fault.

Think all day long, it is better to learn it in a moment; I've tasted it and I'm looking forward to it. Let's go hiking. Climb a trick, the arm does not lengthen, but the person you see is far away; Call with the wind, the sound does not add disease, but the listener is obvious. Those who cheat horses are not good enough, but cause thousands of miles; People who make fake boats can't live in water, let alone in rivers. A gentleman's life is the same, and he is good at false things.

Accumulated soil becomes mountains, and the wind and rain are prosperous; The water drops merged into the ocean and the dragon was born; Accumulate goodness into virtue, the gods are complacent, and the sacred heart is prepared. Therefore, you can't take Wan Li Road without accumulating steps; If you don't accumulate small streams, you won't be a river. Leap, not ten steps; This is a great contribution to the success of Ma Xu. Perseverance, rotten wood can't be carved; Perseverance, the stone can be carved. Earthworms do not have the advantages of minions, and their bones and muscles are strong. They eat the earth and drink the yellow land with their hearts. The crab kneels six times and pinches twice. It's not that the snake hole has no sustenance, it's also impetuous.

The gentleman said: learning can't stop. Indigo is extracted from bluegrass, but its color is bluer than bluegrass; Ice is condensed from water, but it is cooler than water. A piece of wood is very straight, which conforms to the carpenter's straight ink line. If a wheel is bent by fire, its curvature can conform to the circle planned by compasses.

Even if it is dry again, it can't be straight any more, which is caused by artificial processing. So the wood is scratched by ink lines, the axe and saw will be straight, and the metal sword will be sharp when it is ground on the grindstone. A gentleman can learn from others and behave himself every day, so that he can be smart and knowledgeable and his behavior can be blameless.

I used to dream all day, but I didn't get a moment's study. I have stood on tiptoe to see far away, so I might as well climb higher and see wider. Climb high, wave your hands, your arms don't grow, but people can see from a distance; Shouting with the wind didn't get louder, but the listener heard it clearly.

People who use horses and chariots can't walk fast, but they can reach thousands of miles away; People who use boats can't swim, but they can swim across the Yangtze River and the Yellow River. A gentleman is no different from ordinary people in essence, but he is good at learning with the help of foreign things. The soil accumulates into mountains, and the wind and rain start from there; The water becomes a deep pool where dragons will grow; Only by accumulating good deeds and cultivating good moral character can we reach a higher spiritual realm, develop wisdom and have the thoughts of saints.

Therefore, if you don't take small steps, you won't take Wan Li Road; Without a trickle, there is no way to become a river and a sea. A good horse cannot jump ten steps at a time; A bad horse can pull a cart for ten days and go a long way. Its success lies in walking constantly. Carve it and let it go. Don't carve, nor can you carve rotten wood. If you don't stop carving, the stone can also be carved successfully.

Earthworms don't have sharp claws and strong bones and muscles, but they can eat the soil and drink the groundwater on the ground. This is because they are single-minded crabs with six feet and two crab claws, but there are no holes for snakes and eels, and there is no place to live on their bodies. This is because they are impetuous and unfaithful.

Creation background

During the Warring States period, slavery further collapsed, the feudal system gradually formed, and epoch-making changes took place in history. Many thinkers expressed their opinions on the social changes at that time from different positions and angles, and gradually formed different factions such as Mohism, Confucianism, Taoism and Legalism, which was called "a hundred schools of thought contend" in history.

A hundred schools of thought contend and wrote many books, publicizing their own views and criticizing others, resulting in a situation of "a hundred schools of thought contend". Xunzi was a representative figure of Confucianism in the late Warring States period. He believes that the existence of nature does not depend on human will, but people can use subjective efforts to understand it, adapt to it and use it. In order to reveal the significance of learning the day after tomorrow, he created the article "Encouraging Learning".

Brief introduction of the author

Xunzi (about 3 13-238 BC) was honored as Qing, which was also called in the Western Han Dynasty to avoid being taboo by Emperor Gaozu, because Xun and Sun had the same ancient sound. At the end of the Warring States Period, the Yi family of Zhao (now Anze County, Shanxi Province) was a representative figure of the late pre-Qin Confucianism.

Xun Kuang is a thinker of the emerging landlord class. His knowledge is profound. On the basis of inheriting early Confucianism, he absorbed the strengths of various schools and comprehensively reformed them, established his own ideological system and developed the ancient materialism tradition. There are 32 existing Xunzi, most of which are his own works, involving philosophy, logic, politics, morality and many other aspects.

Xunzi criticized all the schools, but praised Confucius' thought as the best idea of governing the country. Xunzi claimed to be the heir of Confucius, especially the "foreign Wang Xue" who inherited Confucius. From the standpoint of epistemology, he critically summarized and absorbed hundred schools of thought's theoretical viewpoints, formed a unique view of nature, morality and social history, and summarized the pre-Qin philosophy on this basis.

The problems of heaven, life and heaven have always been the concerns of various schools in the pre-Qin period. During the Yin, Shang and Western Zhou Dynasties, "Heaven" and "Destiny" were regarded as personality gods. When it comes to Confucius, his personality color is diluted. Confucius mainly talked about benevolence through kissing, and regarded destiny as a blind dominant force.

After Confucius, his disciples and later scholars tried to connect benevolence, heart and life. On the one hand, the pursuit of benevolence is supported by ontology; On the other hand, Heaven, Destiny and Heaven are rationalized and valued.

Xunzi learned elements from the Taoist view of nature, such as heaven, heaven and destiny. However, its theoretical purpose is not to move towards naturalism, but to highlight the separation between man and nature, and then to build its own theory of human nature on the basis of the separation between man and nature.

Xunzi naturalized, objectified and regularized "Heaven", "Destiny" and "Heaven", which can be found in his article "On Heaven". In Xunzi's view, heaven is nature, without reason, will, good and evil, likes and dislikes. Heaven is a natural day, not a personality god. He called it the subtle functions of yin and yang, wind and rain, etc. God, and the nature formed by this function is called heaven. The creation of the universe is not created by God, but the result of the movement of all things themselves.

Xunzi believes that the sky is not mysterious and changeable, but has its own unchanging laws. This law is not a mysterious heaven, but a natural inevitability, which changes independently of human likes and dislikes. People can't violate this law, but only strictly abide by it.

Nature is the real law. Governance is good, governance is chaotic. Heaven will not change because of people's emotions or will, and there is no distinction between good and evil at all. Xunzi is critical of traditional religious superstitions, and thinks that natural changes are not necessarily related to social chaos. It is believed that all kinds of religious ceremonies to sacrifice and mourn the dead are only expressions of "yearning and admiration" and are "human nature" rather than "ghosts".

Xunzi believes that nature and human beings have their own laws and responsibilities. Heaven can't interfere with people, heaven returns to heaven, and people return to people, so it is said that heaven and man are separated and incompatible. The good or bad luck in dealing with chaos lies in people, not in the sky. Heaven and man have different functions. In Xunzi's view, instead of blindly believing in the authority of heaven, worshiping and praising heaven and waiting for the gift of "heaven", it is better to use the laws of nature to serve people.

Xunzi is most famous for his theory of evil nature, which is in direct opposition to Mencius' theory of good nature. His general argument is that all good and valuable things are the products of human efforts. Value comes from culture, and culture is human creation. It is at this point that man is as important as heaven and earth in the universe.
