Creation background: Cen Can was handed over to the North Court in the summer and autumn of Tianbao 13th year of Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty (754), and returned to the East in the spring and summer of Tang Suzong to Germany 2nd year (757). This poem is regarded as this period.
At that time, there were frequent wars in the northwest frontier. With the ambition of making contributions to the Great Wall, Cen Can went out to the frontier twice and stayed in the frontier army for six years. Therefore, he had long-term observation and experience on the dusty life of pommel horse and the icy scenery beyond the Great Wall. In the thirteenth year of Tianbao, this is the second time that Cen Can went to the frontier fortress, serving as the judge of Feng Changqing, our time envoy in the Northwest Court (the subordinate of our time envoy), while the judge of Wu was his predecessor, and the poet wrote this poem by sending him back to Beijing (Chang 'an, the capital of the Tang Dynasty) on the wheel platform.
