Extended information Meng Mu (392 BC-3 BC17), the mother of Mencius, was a native of the State of Jin during the Warring States Period and was famous for her good family education. Meng Mu was thrifty, hardworking and unswerving, and was universally respected in the history of China. Later generations listed Meng Mu, Xu Shu's mother Xu Mu, Yue Fei's mother-in-law and other people who devoted themselves to serving the country as models of their mothers, calling China "the virtuous third mother", and Meng Mu ranked first among the "virtuous third mothers".
After Meng Mu's death, he and Mencius' father were buried at the foot of Maanshan, 25 miles north of Zoucheng. Later generations believed that Mencius became famous because Meng Mu's godson moved three times, so this woodland was called "Meng Mu Forest". In Zoucheng, Mencius' hometown, there are still places to worship, such as Meng Mu's tomb in Maanshan, Mencius' former residence in Fucun (which was assigned to Qufu after the founding of the People's Republic of China), Meng Mu Temple in Mengmiao, and Three Sports Temple in Miaohuying.
