An inch of time and an inch of gold.

Two Poems of Bailudong (Ⅰ)

Wang Zhenbai in Tang Dynasty

Concentrate on reading, I know that spring has passed, and every inch of time is as precious as an inch of gold.

It is not Taoism that mocks, but the teachings of Duke Zhou are devoted to the study of Confucius.

Translation:

Concentrate on reading, before you know it, spring has passed, and every inch of time is like gold.

It's not that Taoist priests laugh at it, but that they put the essence of Duke Zhou and Confucius' thoughts and theories into their study.

Extended data:

"One inch of time and one inch of gold" means that time is precious and should be cherished. This is also the poet's eternal famous saying to future generations, urging everyone to cherish time. It is also the first narrative that naturally triggered the poet's feelings. For thousands of years, he has been encouraging people, especially scholars, to cherish time, pay attention to knowledge accumulation and constantly enrich themselves.

"It's late spring to study", saying that I concentrate on my studies, and before I know it, spring will soon pass. "Deep spring" refers to the late spring. As can be seen from this poem, the poet concentrates on reading, is nervous and full every day, and completely forgets the time.

Spring is almost over, which the poet suddenly discovered inadvertently. This discovery surprised the poet and made him feel a lot. He feels that time flies too fast and there is always not enough time to learn a lot of knowledge.

This song "Two Poems of Bailudong (Part I)" is more than 400 years earlier than Shu Tong in Yuan Dynasty, and it is the earliest origin of "an inch of time and an inch of gold".

In addition, Bailudong in this poem is a famous ancient Bailudong Academy in China, which is also known as "the four major academies in the world" with Yuelu Academy, Shigu Academy and Yingtianfu Academy, and Bailudong Academy is the first of these four academies.
