What does it mean to be complacent?

"Praise poetry and books" means that when a person reads more books, he will carry the spirit of the book, because in ancient times, the content of the book focused on the word "ceremony". He has read more books, which will naturally be influenced by the contents of the books, and his words and deeds will follow the books, forming the unique words and deeds of scholars. Later, it was extended to: a person with knowledge and insight will have a temperament from the inside out without deliberately dressing up. On the contrary, if there is no connotation, no matter how you dress up, you will not appear temperament.

"Boasting Poetically" comes from Song Dynasty poet Su Shi's Farewell to Dong Chuan.

Su Shi's "Farewell to Dong" may not be well known to ordinary readers, but the sentence "I am full of poems" is widely read because it classically expounds the relationship between reading and people's cultivation. Scholars in China have always regarded reading as an effective way to accumulate knowledge and increase learning. The function of reading is not only to possess knowledge, but also to enhance people's spiritual realm. In particular, frequent reading will make people break away from low-level tastes and develop an elegant and refined temperament over time.

"You are full of life, you are full of poems and books." These two sentences were written by Dong Chuan, with thick hair and thick clothes. The word "wrapped in life" is novel and ingenious. It should be "life is wrapped in a big cloth", but once the word order is reversed to "life is wrapped in a big cloth", there is a sense of picture, which means that this life is normal. These two poems praise Dong Chuan for being poor, but diligent in reading, so his spiritual temperament is extraordinary.

"I'm tired of cooking leaves with old Confucianism, but I'm better than stepping on Sophora japonica." The meaning of these two sentences is that Dong Chuan's ambition is not to be poor, and he hopes to get ahead through the imperial examination. Old Confucianism refers to old scholars. Boiled Leaves is a classic. Leaves have bitter taste. Leaves are used in the poem to express the roughness and simplicity of the dishes at the banquet, but the host did not give up the gift because of his meager, but was sincere.

"I'm not looking for a spring horse, but looking at the car." The Spring Horse is an allusion to Meng Jiao's After Graduation. What Su Shi means here is that Dong Chuan has no money to buy a horse even after graduating from the academy, and like Meng Jiao, he "sees all the Chang 'an flowers in one day".

"Choosing a husband's car" refers to the story of choosing a good husband on the day when Tang Jinshi made the list, which is contained in Wang's "Tang Jizi Topic". Su Shi means that Dong Chuan can't see flowers on horseback like Meng Jiao, but he has the opportunity to be surrounded by a "husband-choosing car" to show off himself. These two poems are Su Shi's words of encouragement to Dong Chuan. Being rich is not a problem, but passing the exam is the last word. At that time, everything will be there.

"Pride is like boasting the world, and Sun Wong's wet words are like crows." These two poems continue to encourage Dong Chuan, hoping that one day Dong Chuan can hold his head high when he is the number one scholar, so as to show off the world. When Su Shi wrote here, it seems that he has completely forgotten the beginning of this poem, "I am full of poems and books", and the rest is just a little blessing to a dissatisfied scholar.

This poem is characterized by clever allusions and profound implications. Among them, "humility with poetry and books" is a famous sentence that has been passed down to this day. "Poetry" refers to books here; "Qi" refers to temperament and demeanor; "Hua" means glorious and different. From the context of praising Dong Chuan in poetry, separately, that is to say, people who are diligent in reading always have a refined atmosphere, which makes them look different. It is precisely because it sums up a common phenomenon among scholars that it has become a famous sentence about reading and learning and is widely quoted.
