A flower with five leaves will bear fruit naturally.
Literally, a flower has five petals and grows into a fruitful fruit-some people once regarded "a flower with five leaves" as a natural enlightenment achievement after the "petals of five kinds of wisdom" bloomed; Another way of looking at it-which is generally accepted by people-is "one flower with five leaves, and the result is natural", which means that after Zen took root in China, it spread to Huineng, the sixth ancestor, and formed the five schools of Zen in the south, and later Zen.
The development of learning is generally outside the scope of these five schools. They are:
First, the dead of Weishan and the quiet wisdom of Yangshan created the "Yang Yang School";
Second, Berberis amurensis and Linji started a sect.
Third, Yunmen Yan Wen founded "Yunmen Sect";
Fourth, the good price of Dongshan and the silence of Cao Shanben created the "Cao Dongzong";
5. Clear Wen Yi created "Fa Yan Zong";
Above, it means "one flower with five leaves". The "Five Schools of Southern Zen" all claim to be the descendants of Huineng, and the founder of Zen is authentic.
Zen in Huineng period can be called "Zuchan"; The Zen Buddhism after Huineng can be called "the more ancestors are divided into Zen Buddhism", because the new pursuit of "surpassing Buddha" will inevitably lead to "surpassing ancestors". Moreover, Zen pays attention to the experience between the present and takes the present as the noblest. In addition, "wisdom is in the teacher, reducing the teacher and half the morality; Wisdom is not limited to teachers, but can be taught ",which also makes the personality of Zen scholars develop infinitely." "Therefore, after Mazu Yi Dao, the Buddha cursed the ancestral Mount Deshan, and both the Buddha and the ancestors were impolite to give alms, which appeared together.
So they are divided into five schools because they have grasped and experienced the essence of Zen in different ways. The Zen master of Nanzong Tianrifeng said: "Jile, the mountains are strict, the caves in Cao are fine, the clouds are ancient, and the eyes are clear"; The Zen master has a metaphor: Lin Ji is like a "five-reverse thunder", which shows its strangeness; The cloud gate is like a "red flag flashing", showing its slight dew; As profound as "breaking the monument and crossing the ancient road"; Cao Dongru's "Shu Chi is not at home" shows that he has his back to the other side; The eyes of the law are like "patrolling the night", which shows its exquisiteness.
Each of the five situations has its own characteristics. Let's take Luyangzong and Lin Jizong as examples to talk about their respective characteristics.
Luyang Sect is the earliest of the five schools of Zen, which existed before Wuzong destroyed Buddhism. His pioneers were Ling Zhe of Weishan and Hui Ji of Yangshan.
Yangshan Huiji (8 14 ~ 890), a native of Shaozhou (now Huaiji County, Guangdong Province), became a monk at an early age. At first, the Yangshan monk participated in the meditation under the Stone Frost Empty Monk Hall. On one occasion, he heard a monk who was attending school ask an empty monk, "What kind of spirit did Father Dharma want to convey when he came to China from India?" The empty answer is: "If someone falls into a well, can you save him without a rope? I'll answer you." This obviously aroused Yangshan's interest. He knew there must be a mystery in it, but he couldn't know the exact meaning.
Later, when Yuanyuan was involved, he asked Yuanyuan this question again: "How can I save this person from the well?" Yuan Tan's answer is: "Who is in the well?" Yangshan immediately realized something.
One day, Dan Yuan gave Yangshan 96 photos from Zhong, and Yangshan burned them when he saw them. A few days later, Yuan Tan said to him, "The 96-yuan phase was handed down by our ancestors by a loyal teacher, so you should be good at preserving them." Yangshan said, "I have burned it." Yuan Tan asked, "Why did you burn it?" Yang said, "You can use it, but you can't hold it. If necessary, you can redraw it. " Then draw it again to show the source of trouble. Later, he asked this question to Weishan, and Weishan called him: "Huiji!" " "Yangshan immediately replied:" I am! Weishan told him, "That man has come out of the well." . "Yangshan often mentioned this matter in his later years, saying that he got the" ontology "of Buddhism from Yuan Tan, and he got the" certificate "of Buddhism from Weishan.
One day, Yangshan asked, "How is the residence of Buddha?" Weishan said, "With thoughtless wisdom, think back to the boundless flame of the spirit, think back to the origin, live together, and be the true Buddha." Raise the mountain and realize it in words. Since then, he has served under Weishan Gate for fifteen years. After he left his teacher, he lived in Yangshan, Yuanzhou (now Yichun, Jiangxi). He is a model of Zen. His school, together with his teachers, was called "Yang" by later generations.
The founder of Lin Jizong was Lin Ji (7877 -867), surnamed Xing,No. (now Cao County, Shandong Province). The teenager became a monk, traveled far in his prime, participated in the transportation of Berberis, and later lived in Jiyuan (now Zhengding, Hebei), hence the name. His influence was mainly concentrated in Hebei, where Fa Xi flourished and became famous all over the world. He is the most famous of the five schools of Zen in China.
He was pure and single-minded in meditation when he was first in Huangbai Jackson Association. He was the first to say with great appreciation, "Although he is young, he is different from other monks." Then he asked, "How long has the honor seat been here?" Yi Xuan replied, "Three years." The first seat asked, "Have you asked?" Yi Xuan replied, "No, I don't know what to ask." The first one taught him: "Ask him: What is the true meaning of Buddhism." Yi Xuan walked into the room, and before he finished speaking, Phellodendron amurense came.
When Yi Xuan came back, the first one asked, "How about you ask questions?" Yi Xuan replied, "He hit me before I finished. I don't know what this means. " The first seat said, "Ask again." So Yi Xuan asked again, and he was beaten three times. Yi Xuan was extremely discouraged, so he said to the first building, "I hate the barrier of opportunity, and I can't understand its deep meaning. I'm leaving here now. " The first one said, "Even if you want to leave, you should say goodbye to Phellodendron amurense." Yi Xuan made a ceremony, and then walked down.
The first man went to Huangbai and said, "The young people who ask questions are very nice. If he comes to say goodbye to you, you should give him proper guidance and carve the moon tree so that everyone in the world can enjoy the cool in the future. " So when he came to say goodbye, Huang said to his Berberis, "You leave here and don't go anywhere else. You go to Da Yu Zen Master in Gaoantan, and he will tell you. " Yi Xuan went to see the fool, and the fool asked him, "Where are you from?" Yi Xuan replied, "From Phellodendron amurense." Q: "What does Phellodendron amurense have to say?" Yi Xuan replied, "I asked him three times what Buddhism really means, but he refuted me three times. I don't know where I am wrong. "
The big fool said, "Phellodendron amurense is really such a mother-in-law." He was exhausted by your enlightenment, and you came to me to ask what happened! " Hearing this, Yi Xuan suddenly realized: "The primitive Buddhism that Huang Berberi said is really useless!" The fool grabbed him and said, "You didn't know anything just now, but now you say there is nothing in Phellodendron amurense. What do you see? " Yi Xuan punched him three times in the ribs. The fool pushed him away and said, "Your teacher is Phellodendron amurense, which has nothing to do with me!" "
What did he realize? Later, when talking about Buddhism, he said: Scholars, there is actually nothing to study in Buddhism. This is just an ordinary state of mind. Fools may laugh at me, but smart people can understand.
The ancients said: "It is always stupid to do things outside!" So the so-called "machine" and the so-called "use" have become experiential Zen in daily life and have been fully applied in daily life. "Being the master everywhere, standing everywhere is true", which deeply excavates people's subjective consciousness and subjectivity. In Zen, no one can call for freedom, independence and self-improvement like him. "Why do you want to do whatever you want? No one wants to ask for a Buddha fruit factory." In addition, his common phrase "lonely and vivid" expresses the meaning of this absolute subjective personality.
