The literal meaning is: (I) walk with a bamboo stick and straw sandals. It is lighter than riding a horse. What is there to be afraid of? A coir raincoat can withstand the wind and rain for a lifetime.
This poem comes from "Ding Fengbo·Don't listen to the sound of beating leaves in the forest", which was written by Su Shi, a writer in the Song Dynasty. The original text is as follows:
Don't listen to the sound of beating leaves in the forest. Why not scream and walk slowly? Bamboo sticks and mango shoes are easier than horses, who is afraid? A coop of mist and rain will last a lifetime.
The steep spring breeze blows away the drunkenness, it is slightly cold, but the mountain tops are shining slantingly. Looking back at the desolate place where I came from, there was neither wind, rain nor sunshine.
The first part writes about the mentality of walking forward in the rain, and the second part writes about what I see and feel after the rain, which is full of positive energy. Walking forward in the wind and rain, I have a bamboo stick, straw sandals, and a raincoat, what should I be afraid of? Such optimism and confidence.
From the perspective of creative background
Su Shi, who was born in a literary family, experienced becoming a Jinshi, the death of his parents, and the death of his wife from illness. Shang Wang Anshi carried out the reform and was forced to leave Beijing due to political disagreements. When he was in office in Huzhou, he was imprisoned for the "Wutai Poetry Case".
After he was released from prison, Su Shi was demoted to deputy envoy of Tuanlian in Huangzhou. Why was he deputy envoy of Tuanlian? He is equivalent to the deputy captain of the modern civil self-defense force, which is completely inconsistent with his literary attributes. Fortunately, the county magistrate thought that Su Shi was a good person and allocated a piece of land for him on the east hillside for him to cultivate. Therefore, he got the name Su Dongpo. , Su Shi began to study eating and drinking to live a happy life.
This poem was written in the third year when Su Shi was the deputy envoy of the regiment. Su Shi, who was in middle age, went on a spring outing with his friends. The wind and rain suddenly came. The friend thought it was embarrassing to walk in the rain, but Su Shi didn't care and took it calmly. After that, I moved forward calmly and wrote this song "Ding Fengbo" leisurely.
Meaning of the word
The difficulties in life are like the wind and rain encountered in nature. They always come unexpectedly, but there is nothing to be afraid of. Although I am holding a bamboo stick and wearing straw sandals, I can also move forward gracefully. I am more relaxed and comfortable than the person riding a horse. Does the poet also mean that people who are barefoot are not afraid of wearing shoes? !
Wearing a raincoat means you can live a safe and happy life. Doesn’t it also mean that I have rags to withstand the frost? Then let the storm come more violently!
The wind and rain encountered in nature are a metaphor for the difficulties and obstacles in life. When faced with these hardships, the poet tells us: Who is afraid? A coop of mist and rain will last a lifetime. Whether it's windy or sunny, have an optimistic attitude towards life.
Sublimation
"The sound of beating leaves through the forest", "the sharp spring breeze", "slightly cold", "looking back at the bleak place" facing these wind and rain, who is afraid? The poet's broad-minded and unrestrained spirit makes people instantly feel proud.
The whole poem contains no joy or sorrow, and the philosophy of life and attitude towards life that forget both victory and defeat are presented to the readers. "There is neither wind or rain nor sunshine" is a state of being unfazed by favors and humiliations, forgetting both victory and defeat, and being broad-minded and unrestrained. Will it also make you realize: life is nothing more than this.
