The school, formerly known as Beijing Institute of Chemical Technology, was founded in 1958 and was under the leadership of the former Ministry of Chemical Industry. The goal of the school is to "cultivate advanced chemical engineering talents needed for cutting-edge science and technology." In 1960, the school was designated as a national key university. In 1971, it merged with Beijing Institute of Chemical Fiber Technology to form the new Beijing Institute of Chemical Fiber Technology. In 1978, Beijing Institute of Chemical Fiber Technology was separated from the school. In 1994, the school was renamed Beijing University of Chemical Technology. In 1996, the school entered the list of key universities under the national "211 Project". In the same year, Beijing Chemical Industry Management Cadre College was merged into the school. In 1998, the school was transferred to the direct management of the Ministry of Education.
