Effects and functions of bitter thorn leaves

Also known as Sophora viciifolia Hance, Sophora viciifolia Hance, and Sophora viciifolia Hance. The roots, leaves, flowers and fruits are used as medicine. The roots can be harvested throughout the year; the leaves, flowers and fruits can be harvested in summer and autumn and dried separately.

Bitter in nature and flavor, cold.

Functions and Indications: Clear away heat and detoxify, diuresis and reduce swelling, cool blood and stop bleeding. Used for laryngitis, pneumonia, dysentery, cystitis, edema, epistaxis, hematuria, and blood in the stool.

Result: Regulates qi and eliminates accumulation. Used for indigestion, stomachache, and abdominal pain.

Flower: brew with boiling water to make a refreshing drink to relieve heat.

Usage: Take 3 to 5 qian of root and fruit, decoct in water or grind into powder and drink.
