The story tells that on the day when King Xiangcheng of Chu State was enthroned and knighted, he stood by the river dressed in rich clothes. Dr. Chu Zhuang Xin passed by and was very happy to see him, so he stepped forward to salute and wanted to hold his hand. Xiangchengjun thought of his overstepping etiquette and ignored him. So Zhuang Xin washed his hands and told Xiangchengjun the story of Ejun of the Chu Kingdom:
Ejun Zixi was the younger brother of the King of Chu. He went on a boat trip, and a boatman from Yue who admired him held the boat. The paddle sang to him. The song was melodious, lingering, euphemistic and touching. E Jun was so moved that he immediately had it translated into Chu language, thus giving rise to the words "Yueren Song". After E Jun understood the meaning of the song, instead of being angry, he went over to hug the boatman, covered him with an embroidered quilt, and was willing to sleep with him in the same bed.
Zhuang Xin then asked Xiangcheng Jun: "E Jun is of noble status and can still have fun with the Yue boatman. Why can't I hold your hand?" Xiangchengjun really agreed to his request and handed his hand to him.
Although some scholars believe that this is love between a man and a woman, or the love of the people for a wise monarch, pure confession should not be mixed with these special feelings.
