About the author
Deng Yi (1831-1900), lived in Wugang Prefecture (now Wugang City), Hunan Province in the Qing Dynasty. He studied at Changsha Chengnan Academy in 1848; he studied in Wugang during the Xianfeng period He led the village to bravely resist the siege of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom. In the third year of Tongzhi, he was hired by Zuo Zongtang as an aide to the governor's office and appointed as an alternate magistrate of Zhejiang. In the fifth year of Tongzhi, he returned to his hometown to mourn. In the fourth year of Guangxu, he went to Zhejiang, Jiangsu and Jiangxi provinces to inspect current affairs.
From the eighth to the seventeenth year of Guangxu's reign, he successively gave lectures at Changsha School Classics Hall, Henan Zhiyong Academy, Wuchang Lianghu Academy, etc.; in the eighteenth year of Guangxu's reign, at the invitation of Zhang Zhidong, the governor of Guangdong and Guangxi, he gave lectures on Guangdong Helin In the 19th year of Guangxu's reign, he still lived in his hometown. In the 26th year of Guangxu's reign (1900), he died of illness at his former residence in Dadian Bay at the age of 69.
