Zhang Fei, a native of Zhuojun, Han nationality, named Yide, was an important general of Shu Han during the Three Kingdoms period. He was known for his bravery, recklessness, and hatred of evil.
In 2009, Zhang Fei appeared as Zhang Sai's black face and a brave and foolhardy person who had traveled through the bottom of the pot. In the end, he was beaten to death by his subordinates because he punished them too much. However, according to some historical records, the real Zhang Fei was not like this. Yuan Mei said in Volume 19 of "The Romance of the Three Kingdoms": Zhang Fei does not seem to be a vulgar and reckless person, nor is he illiterate. There is "Diao Douming" written by Zhang Fei in Fuling, and there are also famous inscriptions inscribed by Zhang Fei in Liujiang County. Before the Ming Dynasty, Zhang also wrote a poem praising Zhang Fei: "The sword is horizontal in the ancestral hall on the river, and the silver hook is heavy on the ground." Zhang Fei's "Diao Douming" has not been handed down. Apart from the stone above, there seems to be no other masterpiece of his calligraphy handed down from generation to generation. On the contrary, on the stele pavilion in front of Zhang Fei Temple in Yunyang County, Sichuan Province, there is Li Anyun: You are the master of the brush, a wise general and hero have cried on their coats since then. From this point of view, Zhang Feifei is not only a calligrapher, but also a master of both civil and military skills.
Liu Bei's "big ears and shoulders, hands above his knees" and Guan Yu's "beautiful beard" and "handsome appearance" were described in detail, but Zhang Fei's appearance was not mentioned at all. This is indeed a strange phenomenon. Because of this, Luo Guanzhong has more room to play. In people's minds, Zhang Fei's appearance should be extremely powerful. "The red-faced Guan Gong and the black-faced Zhang Fei chirp" is a popular lyric that reflects the artistic image that people have sketched for the brave General Zhang Fei for thousands of years. In "Suiyuan Essays", Zhang Fei is described as "eight feet long, with a leopard's head and eyes, a tiger's beard that thunders, and a galloping horse." Tuotuo is a ghost-hunting Zhong Kui. Is Zhang Fei black or ugly? Although there is no frontal data, we can infer from the side data.
There is a piece of evidence that gives people a more specific understanding of Zhang Fei’s true appearance. In 2004, the cultural relics department discovered a stone human head on Zhangfeiying Mountain in Jianyang, Sichuan. This stone statue is about four meters high and more than three meters wide. According to local people, this was specially carved by craftsmen of the Tang Dynasty to commemorate Zhang Fei's presence here. And "Zhang Fei" has a kind heart, long ears, thick lips, and an unnecessary white face, which is very different from the image of Zhang Fei in "Three Kingdoms" and the black-face campus in people's minds. The discovery of this stone statue forced people to re-examine Zhang Fei's true face.
