According to Mu He's "Translating Virtue and Carrying Things: The Contribution of Tsinghua Humanities Scholars to China's Translation" (Shanghai Science and Technology Literature Publishing House), 1932, Chen Yinque was appointed as the tutor of Tsinghua University National College, and wrote a composition question and a strange question for the Chinese test of the college entrance examination. The first part was "Sun Walker", and the candidates were asked to pair out the second part.
The Monkey King's "Sun Walker" in The Journey to the West is a household name, known to all ages. It is a little difficult for these middle school students to make candidates compare couplets. It is said that only three candidates matched later, and one of them was a famous linguist, Professor Zhou Zumo from the Chinese Department of Peking University. They are right, Sun is right, Hu is right, Xing is right, and Zhe is right. The answer is Hu Shi's name, which is very interesting and surprises Chen Yinque.
At that time, people thought that Chen Yinque was deliberately teasing his friend Hu Shizhi. In fact, Chen Yinque's standard answer is "Wang" or "Zu Chongzhi", a mathematician in the Northern and Southern Dynasties. There is no intention of poking fun at Hu Shi at all.
Chen Yinque asked this question to examine the students' level of Chinese studies in writing, tone, vocabulary, grammar and literature. In The Evolution of Xuanzang's Disciples, he investigated the folklore reason why the Monkey King was called "Sun Walker": "The Indian story books Vimalakīrti Jing and Manjusri Moon Hee Pin were introduced to China, and were adapted into the Tale of Sanzang by eminent monks in the Southern and Northern Dynasties, and Wu Cheng'en later read this book. The origin of Monkey Brother's name is actually that when Xuanzang went to the West to learn from the scriptures, a monk Hu led the way. Monk Hu and the monkey are homophonic, and the Han people are so lively that the play is called' Sun Walker'. "
Chen Yinque's title shows that "Dudui" contains micro and macro culture, as well as the * * * and personality of language. No wonder his Chinese test was adopted by Tsinghua.
