The invention of movable type printing
Engraving printing originated in ancient China. As early as the Sui and Tang Dynasties, block printing was popular in the market. In Song Dynasty, Bi Sheng invented movable type printing. Various types of movable type appeared in past dynasties, including cement wood type, pottery type, porcelain type and bronze type, but movable type printing was not popular in ancient China.
There are a large number of Chinese characters, and movable type printing is not as convenient as western languages, and it requires higher technology and requirements; Block printing is easy to embody the aesthetic feeling of China's calligraphy and easy to preserve.
Bi Sheng's movable-type raw material "mud" refers to clay used for firing pottery. After the movable type is made, it is fired in a pottery kiln, and the fired movable type is hard and smooth. Movable type printing in Bi Sheng includes the processes of making movable type, typesetting, disassembling, printing, storing and retrieving movable type, which is suitable for publications with large printing space and a large number.
