Hu loved painting since childhood. 1923 Hu was admitted to Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts, the first institution of higher learning in China, with excellent results. During his school days, Hu made a thorough and systematic study of traditional painting theories and techniques, and at the same time used the new ideas of modern art theory to cultivate spirit and emotion, forming a unique artistic style. After graduation, Hu went to Shanghai, Nanjing and other places to paint friends, and became bosom friends with Pan Tianshou, Xu Beihong, Zhang Daqian and Fu Baoshi. Hu is good at ink painting.
