The poem says:
The house is in a human environment, without the noise of carriages and horses.
How can you do this? The mind is far away from itself.
Picking chrysanthemums under the eastern fence, you can see Nanshan leisurely.
The mountain air is getting better day by day, and the birds are flying back and forth.
There is a true meaning in this, but I have forgotten to explain it.
Appreciation: This poem is the fifth of the twenty poems "Drinking" written by Tao Yuanming. The imagery of the poem constitutes the middle scene and the meaning, all by chance and unintentionally. The two sentences "picking chrysanthemums" express accidental interest. There are chrysanthemums on the east fence, so I picked them by chance; while seeing the chrysanthemums in the south is also just for fun. If you see the mountains accidentally, how can you pick the chrysanthemums intentionally? The birds in the mountains return at dusk, but their return coincides with the time when I see Nanshan Mountain. This is also a coincidence. The "true meaning" of this is a secret that has not been taught by thousands of sages. Even if there are thousands of volumes of Taoist books and thousands of pages of Buddhist scriptures, they cannot fully understand the mystery, so we have to leave it alone "I have forgotten to explain it". This kind of accidental interest, accidental and unintentional feelings and scenes are exactly the unconscious projection of the poet's original and unobstructed state when his life is enlightened. Hidden away from the city, the truly peaceful state of mind is not created by nature, but is the externalization of your own state of mind.
The famous saying of the ages: "Picking chrysanthemums under the eastern fence, leisurely seeing the Nanshan Mountain" expresses the poet's leisurely contentment and affection for the mountains and rivers.
