Wu Putang's life

On June 1946 and 18 after the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, Pu Tang married the grandson of his third brother Wang Shoubao (Ding Shu) Mr. Fu 'an. Because Putang believes in Christ, a wedding was held in Hangzhou Church. Just as they tied the knot, Mr. Fuan held two boxes of seals in his collection, which contained more than a dozen squares, which were carved by Mr. Fuan for his father Wang Tongbo and his third brother in his early years as one of his granddaughter's dowries.

Shortly after their marriage, the Casting and Printing Bureau of the National Government sent a special person to Shanghai to invite Mr. Fu 'an to come out of the mountain and resume Mrs. Feng's work. However, Fuan was used to the free life of engraving books, and was unable to do so because of his old age and infirmity. So he recommended Park Tong to go, and attached a condition that Wang would go with him. In August of that year, Park Tang first went to Nanjing to work in the Casting and Printing Bureau of the National Government as the technical director, specializing in the seal cutting of the official seal. It seems that the seal of the "presidential seal" is in his hand. A month later, Wang also went to Nanjing to work as a clerk (i.e., a clerk) in the printing and casting bureau, and since then they have had a stable job. On the eve of liberation, the Casting and Printing Bureau of the National Government was dissolved, and the Park Tong couple lost their jobs again.

From 65438 to 0956, Pu Tang went to work in the Antiquities Arrangement Department of Shanghai Cultural Relics Protection Committee through the matchmaking of Chen Shutong. During the period of 1959, the Municipal Cultural Management Committee co-located with the Shanghai Museum, and Park Tang was appointed as the head of the editorial team of the Shanghai World Expo. Shang Bo's rich collection and expanding vision make his calligraphy and printmaking art Jin Meng. He has carved collections for museums in Shanghai, Anhui and Shenyang, and libraries in Beijing, Shanghai and Shandong University. It's beautiful. It's still in use today. In particular, President Mao Zedong asked his secretary, Tian Jiaying, to come to Shanghai and let Putang engrave the seal of "Shi Mao Collection" which Chairman Mao loved very much (Figure 3).

The author of Huang's posthumous work "The Seal of Caotang" is Pu Tang. He spent 40 nights, meticulous, meticulous, and seemed to have a feeling like pouring pearls of all sizes into a plate of jade. Because his works are few and not widely circulated, the title of the book is covered by the printed name (Figure 4). Park Tang served as a sailor in the lake and has carefully carved several squares for it. We can often find the seals that Pu Tang carved on his masterpieces, such as Beautiful Storm Show, Wu Huaping Leisure Exhibition, I see how beautiful the green hills are, and I should be like this. Especially in the last two seals, the former draws lessons from the ten-fold grammar and cloth seal of the official seal. Although there are many horizontal paintings on the printed surface, they are so awkward and gentle. The latter was printed by Hui School (Deng), which makes this multi-character seal beautiful and elegant, showing its charm (Figure 5). The lake sail painting uses the park Tang seal, just as the Daqian painting uses the Ju Lai seal, which complements each other.

In the early 1960s, Putang's printing art made great efforts to innovate. In addition to Fuan's family style, he also printed brick carvings, bamboo slips, mirror carvings, Sui and Tang scriptures into words, or made noodles, or made a side payment, which was unique and unprecedented. During this period, together with Fang Quji, Shan and others, he created Qu Qiubai's Pen Name Seal, Cuban Proverbs Seal, Pig Seal (Figure 6) and other works, which were well received by readers. However, the good times did not last long. Shortly after the Cultural Revolution began,1June 23, 966 (Duanyang Festival, Thursday), Pu Tang committed suicide because of persecution, at the age of 45. An elegant melody in the history of Indian altars came to an abrupt end.

In my teacher, Mr. Jiang Chengzhi, I saw the Bodhisattva Yin Gao, which has been treasured by the master for many years. When I opened the album, I saw the ink extension label of "Putang seal" by Chen Shutong, and then nearly 340 square seals, with ink on the ink surface and black screen separated (Figure 7). Many seals in it are rare, so I asked about the origin of this album. Master told me that after Master Fu's death, he and Park Tong often exchanged impressions. He once admired the art of seals and carved many yellow seals for Park Tong to see. After reading it, Pu Tang told the master that Huang's printing art is very good, but Zhejiang School is more interesting, so we should continue to study Zhejiang School. Learning from each other's printing art and being honest with each other really enjoyed it. Park Tang also often gives his carved works to his master. Over time, Pu Tang's prints accumulated more and more, and this book "Printed Draft of Pu Tang" came into being.

The master also told me that Park Tang carved many sentences of Chairman Mao's poems in the mid-1960s, and each side was different from the previous works as far as possible. Speaking of this, he turned the page of the album to this page, and eight seals were very spiritual. This is the whole poem of Yellow Crane Tower, a bodhisattva of Chairman Mao, carved by Pu Tang around 1965. Eight forms and techniques are used to express the meaning of the words. "A vast sea of nine schools spread to China", using the all-white method of the Han people, all the strokes are square and thick; "A thick line runs through the north and south", printed on six sides in Wei and Jin Dynasties, and some hanging needle seals are long and straight, which is more imposing. So let the past serve the present, which others do not have; "misty rain", with round wide eaves and fine Zhu style; "Tortoise and Snake Lock the River" adopts the ancient seal cutting method to reproduce a long history; "Yellow Crane Companion", with the white grammar of Zhejiang School, is full of words and spirits; "Leave it for tourists", using Zhu grammar in Yuan Dynasty, which is dense, dignified and beautiful; "Let the wine pour", using Zhejiang Zhu grammar, is tall and straight, tough and natural; He finished the whole creation with his skillful and handy white grammar of Zhejiang School. The master recalled: "I remember that when I went to Putang, seven seals had been carved, and only the tortoise and snake had not carved the river." He showed me some Yin Gao's works and asked me about my thoughts and choices. I thought the later sculpture style was very good and interesting, so I urged him to adopt it. "(Figure 8)

The master pointed to the album and said that he still kept a lot of original stones printed in it. It was a day shortly after Park Tong's death. Suddenly, Mr. Fang Quji called and said that there were many self-carved seals of Park Tong. You can have a look if you like. When I was a teacher, I wiped the seal of Putang, and when I talked about it, it was vivid as if it was yesterday. Although the teacher was in a bad situation at this time, she tried her best to buy some seals. In this way, together with the seal that Pu Tang carved for the teacher before his death, there are also many. Mr. Jiang's younger brother also wrote a poem named "The Legacy of the Park" for this purpose.

Art should keep pace with the times. Looking at Putang printing art, we can keep pace with the times and break a new path on the basis of predecessors' traditions. Finally, shine on you has a unique face. If that day is a holiday, Park Tong's achievements in stylus will be infinite. When we watch seal cutting in Putang, we should know how he inherited the essence of the ancients, created a new trend of the times, and made seal cutting, an ancient traditional art in China, last forever and carry forward.
