The Origin of China Seal Carving

China seal cutting originated in the Spring and Autumn Period and rose in the Warring States Period. Seal cutting flourished in Qin and Han Dynasties. The development period of seal cutting is from Wei, Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties to Song and Yuan Dynasties. Among them, the function of seal was greatly expanded in Sui and Tang Dynasties, and literati painters and painters participated in seal creation in Song and Yuan Dynasties, which promoted the change of seal function from relying on letters to artistic appreciation. After the Ming Dynasty, seal cutting reached its climax. Seal cutting was very popular in Qing Dynasty.

Seal cutting is a seal art combining calligraphy and seal cutting, which is a unique Chinese character art form in China. It has a long history, extensive and profound, integrating history, literature, philosophy, aesthetics, philology, exegetics, Tibetan studies, calligraphy and seal cutting techniques, and is a "world in a square inch".

Seal cutting and calligraphy are "twin sisters of China art", which are printed by books and by books. Calligraphy and seal cutting complement each other, and seal cutting and calligraphy and painting art are integrated into one, which is full of atmosphere. In 2009, it was selected as "Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity".

Traditionally, seal cutting must be done first, and there is even a saying that "seal cutting is divided into seven parts and seal cutting is divided into three parts". Seal cutting itself is an art closely combined with calligraphy. The basic difference between the work of the seal engraver and the seal engraved by the teacher in the engraving shop is that the former is "writing" and pays attention to rules and seal techniques, while the latter relies on "painting", not counting rules and seal techniques.

In modern times, official script, cursive script and regular script were also used in printing.

Composition is to organize the overall layout according to the different shapes and sizes of printing surfaces and different printing materials. The arrangement and layout of seal script characters is the so-called separation of Zhu and Bu Bai. Seal shows its artistic charm in a small range with a few words, so it requires changeable words, colorful layout and artistry.
