The calligraphy work with the greatest influence in the history of Chinese calligraphy and known as "the best running script in the world" is "Lanting Preface" by Wang Xizhi of the Eastern Jin Dynasty.
"Preface to Orchid Pavilion" was written by Wang Xizhi while he was traveling with his friends using cocoon paper and rat whisker pen. The whole article has twenty-eight lines and three hundred and twenty-four words. Its composition is clear and seamless. His writing style and writing style are even more wonderful. There are twenty "zhi" characters and seven "no" characters in the whole article, each with its own characteristics but not the same. He can pay attention to avoid "looking like an operator" and "having the same word". This kind of artistic thought is very valuable.
The Preface to Orchid Pavilion is so charming and powerful that it is unprecedented in history. After Li Shimin, Emperor Taizong of the Tang Dynasty, obtained Wang Xizhi's ink of "Preface to Orchid Pavilion", he ordered his ministers Zhao Mo, Han Daozheng, Feng Chengsu, Zhuge Zhen and others to develop it. Several copies were given to the crown prince and the king's ministers. When Li Shimin was about to die, he had to "put cocoons and paper from Lanting Pavilion into Zhaoling" for burial. The only copies of "Lanting Preface" that people have seen today are Feng Chengsu's copy and the copy by Chu Suiliang and Yu Shinan, the great calligraphers of the Tang Dynasty.
When Wang Xizhi was twelve years old, he was taught calligraphy theory by his father and learned calligraphy from Mrs. Wei. Later, he crossed the Yangtze River and traveled to famous mountains in the north. He saw the calligraphy of Li Si and Cao Xi, as well as the calligraphy of Zhong Yao and Cai Yong. He changed his beginner's learning, learned from others' strengths, and made innovations in running script and cursive script. He integrated some of the advantages of brushwork and word formation that were scattered in previous and contemporary calligraphy works into a brand-new calligraphy work. With brushwork as the backbone and charm as the soul, he studied the styles carefully, introduced the old and brought forth the new, "both "Gathering together people's methods to prepare a family" has changed the simple style of calligraphy since the Han and Wei dynasties, and has become a new and beautiful style. It has reached the height of "Guiyue Group's products are the best in ancient and modern times", and people call it the "Sage of Calligraphy" . Li Shimin, Emperor Taizong of the Tang Dynasty, admired Wang Xizhi's calligraphy very much. The imperial palace collected 3,600 authentic works of Wang Xizhi. Tang Taizong himself also wrote "The Biography of Wang Xizhi". Appreciating his works is like appreciating a solemn and tranquil landscape painting, like listening to a piece of melodious and lingering music, or reciting a page of distant and beautiful poems, which have been praised by future generations for a long time.
