Zhang Daqian's painting art can be divided into three periods: the classical style period, the transitional period and the peak period. Before the age of 60, Zhang Daqian concentrated on copying, from Shi Tao and Zhu Da to Xu Wei, Chen Chun and Song Yuan, until the murals of Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes. His painting style has also changed from similar to Shi Tao and Zhu Da to Tang Jin Song Yuan style.
Zhang Daqian's life-long creation has reached a state of "eclecticism, and both the north and the south are rich". It combines literati painting with literati painting, palace art and folk art, featuring figures, landscapes, flowers and birds, insects and fish, animals, meticulous brushwork and freehand brushwork, all of which are exquisite.

Zhang Daqian is the most legendary master of Chinese painting in China in the 20th century. He knows everything about painting, calligraphy, seal cutting and poetry. In his early years, he devoted himself to studying ancient calligraphy and painting, especially landscape painting.
After living abroad, the style of painting combined with words, heavy color and ink painting, especially splashing ink and setting colors, created a new artistic style. His research methods are worth learning from painters who try to move from tradition to modernity.
