Ouyang Xiu, Han Yu, Liu Zongyuan, Su Shi, Su Xun, Su Zhe, Wang Anshi and Ceng Gong were collectively called "Eight Great Writers in Tang and Song Dynasties", and later generations were collectively called "Four Great Writers in Ancient Chinese Literature".
Ouyang Xiu was a literary leader in the literary history of the Song Dynasty. He led the poetry innovation in the Northern Song Dynasty, and inherited and developed Han Yu's ancient prose theory. The height of his creation in prose and his theory of ancient prose have influenced the cultural history of China since then and created a generation of writing style. He presided over the compilation of the Book of the New Tang Dynasty and wrote the History of the New Five Dynasties alone.
