The Lu family was named after Tian Tong, the youngest son of King Xuan of Qi during the Warring States Period, who was granted the title of Pingyuan Lu Township (now Pingyuan County, Shandong).
Origin of surname:
There are four main origins of the surname Lu: Zhuan Xiang, Gui surname, Yun surname and surnames changed by other clans.
1. From Zhuan Xiang: It is said that the tribe named Zhuan Xiang’s son is distributed in the Ruhe area in southeastern Henan today. He was called his son Laotong, and his second son, Li and Wu Hui, successively served as Zhurong clan during the Gaoxin era (the title of the leader in charge of fire in ancient times, representing the extremely high status and power in the clan).
2. From the Gui surname (Yao surname Gui surname -> Gui surname Chen -> Gui surname Tian -> Gui surname Lu): During the Warring States Period, King Xuan of Qi (319 BC - 301 BC When he was in power), he granted his young son Tian Tong to Lu Township, and his descendants took Lu as their surname. Luxiang is the ancient residence of the Lu Zhong family, now Lingxian County, Shandong Province. Gui's surname Lu also has a history of more than 2,300 years.
3. From the surname Yun: During the Western Weekend, a group of Rong people with the surname Yun from the west entered the Luo Valley in the north of the Qinling Mountains. This is the area where the Lu Zhong family first lived. Lu Zhong's eldest son was named Kunwu. The Rong people living in Luo Valley took Lu Zhongkunwu's abbreviation as Lu Kun. Because the pronunciation was changed to Lu Hun, they were called Lu Hunrong in history. At the beginning of the Spring and Autumn Period, a branch of Lu Hunrong moved eastward to the upper reaches of Luoshui River in western Henan Province, and established the Lu Hun Kingdom in the north of Fuliu City in the northeast of Song County, Henan Province. In 525 BC during the Spring and Autumn Period, Qinggong of Jin destroyed the Lu Hun Kingdom, and his descendants took the country as their surname and were called part of China.
4. Change of surname from another clan: In ancient times, the origin of the Lu surname was not only the "Plain Land" with Lu Tong as its ancestor, but also the Xianbei people who adopted Liugu due to the reforms implemented during the period of Emperor Xiaowen of the Northern Wei Dynasty. Due to the change of surname, it was called "the land of Henan".
