How many languages are there in China? 1956. Ethnic linguists found more than 60 minority languages during a national survey. Since 1980s, they have gone deep into frontiers, mountains and islands and discovered more than 40 little-known languages, such as Lingao, Mo, Rouruo and Germanic. Up to now, more than 20 languages/kloc-0 have been discovered in China. There are 40 languages spoken by 27 ethnic groups, including Han nationality. This shows that not all languages have characters. The usage of these 40 languages is as follows: Chinese is commonly used by Chinese, Hui and Manchu; Mongolia, Tibet, Uygur, Kazak, Kirgiz, North Korea, Yi, Dai, Lahu, Jingpo, Xibo, Russia and other 12 ethnic groups use 16 languages. Seven languages are spoken in parts of six ethnic groups, including Lisu, Hui, Wa, Zhuang, Bai and Yao. After the founding of People's Republic of China (PRC), China government provided new services to 12 ethnic groups based on the Latin alphabet, namely Zhuang, Buyi, Miao, Dong, Hani, Lisu, Li, Naxi, Bai, Tu and Yao. At present, there are 36 ethnic publishing houses in China that publish books in 23 ethnic languages.
