Henan University School of Art is the earliest higher art institution established in Henan Province. Its predecessor was the Art Department of Kaifeng Normal School established in 1949, where Henan’s modern art education began.
On this basis, Henan Art Institute was established in 1958, which was renamed Zhengzhou Art Institute in 1959. In 1962, the universities in Henan Province were restructured, and the Art Institute was merged into Henan University to establish the Art Department. In 1996, the Provincial Party Committee and the Provincial Government decided to reestablish the Henan Art Institute on the basis of the art disciplines of Henan University. It was affiliated to Henan University. Until 1997, it was the only undergraduate training unit for art education in Henan Province.
In 1998, the School of Arts of Henan University was reorganized and established as the School of Arts of Henan University.
