Characteristics of Su style characters (2): Flat knots

Contrary to the slender European style fonts, the knotted characters in Su Shi's calligraphy are mostly flat. This feature is prominently reflected in his works such as "Red Cliff Ode" and "Dongting Spring Ode".

"Dongting Spring Ode" has vigorous writing style, leisurely and elegant posture, free and elegant, and the knotted words are extremely tight, which reflects the characteristics of Su Shi's calligraphy of "short and fat". Wang Shizhen said: "This is not only distinguished by its ancient elegance, but also has a variety of postures, and its structure is rigorous and no stroke is out of control. It must be the best in Meishan. The viewer should not be impressed by the traces of ink and pigs." Qianlong once commented: "Essence and Qi" The rich and luxurious pavilion is full of beauty, which is rare in Xin Dongpo's book. "This poem was collected by An Qi in the early Qing Dynasty. During the Qing Dynasty, it was entered into the imperial court and engraved in the "Sanxi Hall Dharma Notes". Puyi abdicated the throne and was hidden in the puppet imperial palace in Changchun. In 1945, he was lost among the people.

At that time, there was a company commander in the Imperial Guard whose surname was Liu. His family lived above the Puppet Manchukuo Palace. He gave Su Shi's "Dongting Spring Ode" and other calligraphy and paintings to his family along with some gold and silver jewelry. Later, He disappeared without a trace. In early December 1982, his son Liu Gang, a history teacher at Jilin No. 7 Middle School, donated the calligraphy and painting to the Jilin Provincial Museum after several appraisals and confirmed it to be authentic. The front of the roll was sealed by water and the leader was torn off when it was lost, causing damage.
