Is it illegal to use traditional Chinese characters?

It is not illegal to use traditional Chinese characters, but it should be used under the circumstances stipulated by the state: according to Article 17 of the Law of People's Republic of China (PRC) on General Language and Characters, traditional Chinese characters and variant Chinese characters can be kept or used under any of the following circumstances:

(1) Cultural relics and historic sites;

(2) variations in surnames;

(3) Artistic works such as calligraphy and seal cutting;

(4) Handwritten inscriptions and signboards;

(five) required by publishing, teaching and scientific research;

(six) special circumstances approved by the relevant departments of the State Council.
