Later, when the first Opium War broke out, British artillery hit here, the plaque was blown in half, and the "smoke" part was gone. It was not until modern times that people knew that history from those scattered historical materials, so they named a street here "Taipingsha" and expanded to its periphery.
Taipingsha: The scenery is beautiful.
From the south section of Beijing Road to the south section of Huilong Road, there are several roads with strange names: Taipingsha, Zengsha and Xinsha. Old maps clearly tell us their origins, and they are the witness of the vicissitudes of Guangzhou.
"Sand" refers to sandbars, which are sand dunes deposited in rivers. Taipingsha is now about 200 meters away from the Pearl River. However, 200 years ago, it was just a Jiang Xinzhou on the Pearl River. In the Northern Song Dynasty, the north bank of the Pearl River was near today's Wen Ming Road. In the Southern Song Dynasty, the riverbank moved south to Taikang Road today. At that time, Taipingsha was also the five sandbars of the Pearl River, called "Wuzhou".
When was Wuzhou renamed "Taipingsha"? It turned out that due to the continuous siltation of the riverbed, by the Ming Dynasty, the five continents had merged into one and became sandbars near the north bank of the Pearl River. Under the management of people, sandbanks have become beautiful, and lotus flowers, green willows and farmers are everywhere in low-lying areas. Outside the sandbar, fishing sails are dotted.
Chen Gongyin, a famous poet in the early Qing Dynasty, settled in Yuxianfang, Guangzhou in his later years, which is very close to Shazhou. He often lingers in this picturesque place. Here, he wrote the four characters "Peace along the lake" on one side's forehead. Calligraphy was slim, elegant and vigorous, which was highly respected by people at that time and became an eye-catching symbol on the sandbar at that time, so people took the first two words of the square forehead as the proper name of the sandbar.
Later, pavilions and pavilions such as Liutang, Shuiming Building, Yanzhu Building, Xiuhai Building, Yanhu Building, Suichu Building and Yueyun Building continued to be built at the foot of Taiping Shalu. Among them, Xiuhai Tower is especially famous for its "rich treasure and exquisite structure" and is named after Su Dongpo's poem "East Sea in Sleeves". Zhang Weiping, a poet in the Qing Dynasty, once wrote a poem praising the cloud: "Li Anyun was the first to live in a quiet and sandy place, and was the first to be original". It can be seen that the name of Taipingsha has been circulated in the Qing Dynasty.
Increasing sand, like Taiping sand, is the result of nature sculpture. The continuous accumulation of river sediment makes the beach develop, and the western part of Taiping sand continues to extend and increase, so it is called "increasing sediment" Before the Opium War, it was already a place where water residents lived. West of Zengsha Street, Huaxia Hotel in Haizhu Square today, formerly known as Xinsha, is actually a continuation of Taiping Sha and Zengsha, so it is called "New". On the map half a century ago, there were streets such as Xinsha Shangjie, Xinsha Xiajie and Xinsha Water Department.
