Silent master?
Xiaosong Qu
Composer Xiaosong Qu is known as "Master of Silence" and "Master of the Mean", and he is also a member of "Golden Generation of Contemporary Composers in China". His works are widely broadcast all over the world. In various arts and music festivals, Xiaosong Qu's name is also one of the names with the highest frequency. Every note in his work "Running Grass" witnessed the process of sound from the instrument to the disappearance. ...
"Walking Grass and Breathing" jumps out of our general understanding of music, jumps out of all trivial things, restores the truest side of music to the listener, and returns our lost perception to our hearts. Music is not only entertainment, but also a panacea for nourishing the body and mind.
Lin Huaimin, the director, feels the inner peace of composer Xiaosong Qu from the music in the works created by Running Grass, which is the same as the charm in his dance works. ......
Cloud Gate Dance Collection "Walking Grass" Stills
Running grass is a lyric dance inspired by calligraphy. This is a classic work, inspired by the internationally renowned choreographer Lin Huaimin's China calligraphy. Dancers imitate their bodies and develop restrained and energetic movements full of cadence. On the stage, there are large-scale projections of famous calligraphers such as Wang Xizhi, Huai Su and Zhang Xu, as if dancing and calligraphy had merged into a flowing art through thousands of years of private dialogue.
Harmonious comfort
Through Running Grass,
We can hear the composer Xiaosong Qu.
The creative direction of "non-western form",
He himself stepped into a more harmonious realm through this work.
The title of the work is the art of Chinese calligraphy. There is a famous calligrapher's work in history. On the surface, it is a glyph and charm, but in fact it contains the writer's energy and artistic conception. Therefore, although the work is based on the art of calligraphy, it has gone beyond the calligraphy itself and written about breathing. It is man's breath, the breath of everything, the breath of heaven and earth. It is easy, tolerant, long and finally a harmonious existence to hint at the existence of silence with the voice of moderation.

We often ask whether "eternity" really exists,
We often pay attention to whether music is "good" enough.
We often ignore the inner harmony of music. ......
Everything will go through the process from birth to death. Sound is born from silence and disappears in silence, which is a kind of harmony. Running grass only explains a natural process, which is different from the music we are familiar with. If listening is an art, then running grass is the most essential way to interpret this art. You need a quiet environment, a down-to-earth heart and a period of leisure time to listen to this record.
Walk on the grass and breathe.

Excerpt from inner page
.......
Regarding the idea of "running grass", Lin Huaimin told me that the dance of "Shui Yue" made Bagua Palm and Tai Ji Chuan invisible. The dance of "Walking Grass" will be based on calligraphy and started on a simple black and white background.
Although I can't write, I always like calligraphy. Although I have always liked calligraphy, I have never been very good at it. So I took this rare opportunity to visit Badashan people from Oracle Bone Inscriptions to the late Ming and early Qing dynasties. As a result, the first draft of "Walking Grass" fell into the pen.
Feeling uneasy, I brought a recording from Shanghai to Taipei to invite Lao Lin to listen.
After listening to the recording, lim told a little thing:
One morning, he meditated under the bodhi tree where the Buddha was lecturing. I intend to go back to the station near lunch time, but I can't stand up. There seems to be an invisible hand on my head.
At that time, a bodhi leaf fell leisurely. ...
When he finally got up, the leisurely falling Bodhi leaves had withered. ...
Lim's story reminds me of a past event in my memory:
"There is a modern art organization called' Yellow Death near Philadelphia'. Every year, different modern art groups are invited to stay for a few months and do some workshops. 1990 autumn,' Yellow Spring' invited Zuni icosahedron, a Hong Kong experimental troupe. Mr. Rong Nianzeng, the artistic director of Golden Year, is an old friend of mine. He invited me to go with him, so we went to the grave.
Lao Rong is a very relaxed artist. After doing some workshops every day, we will go for a walk in the nearby forest and live a leisurely life.
One day, I wanted to do something in the recording studio, so I chose an old dance drama. The rhythm at the beginning was extremely slow, and only one D was used in the first five minutes. At first, the voice slowly and weakly entered the alto and slowly and weakly disappeared, then there was a' pause' bar, and then it appeared again. I slowed down the speed of the tape twice, and the sound that slowly entered and slowly disappeared became slower and deeper, and the' pause' was longer. I slowed down again, four times slower than the original speed. I still know this is my work because I know every detail of it. But when I adjusted the speed to 8 times slower than before, something wonderful happened. I no longer know that this is my work, and it is no longer a' work'. Generally speaking, when the speed slows down, the pitch will naturally decrease. When the speed is eight times slower, I can't hear' music', but only hear some indescribable and extremely low' noise', approaching slowly and weakly, leaving slowly and weakly, leading to a very, very broad space. After the rest of the original festival, this moment is like a trillion years for me. I waited for the next sound, but it remained silent. I think there must be something wrong with the machine. As soon as I got up, the sound came again. This is a feeling I have never experienced in my life.
I usually listen to music and like being in the dark. When composing music, there is neither color nor image in front of my eyes, only the sound I hear in colorless air. At that moment in the studio, I felt as if I had fallen into a world of pure time and space, with no beginning, no end and no end. Is that a feeling close to infinity? ..... It contains the earth and mountains, the sun, the moon and stars, and countless galaxies. It is an infinite existence. I fell into such a world at that time, and I felt integrated with it, or it melted me into it. Looking back carefully, I feel that there is neither "it" nor "I", and there are no "eternal" topics such as love and hate that people usually like to talk about in art.
It is a feeling of entering infinity and melting into invisibility.
……
What I remember most about that experience is silence. Secondly, there are two kinds of "noise" which are very slow, very slow and very low. For me, they exist for silence. Contrary to other parts of music that people usually understand, this understanding tells me that silence is the ultimate and most basic existence. Voice is short, but silence is permanent. Voice is born from silence and returns to silence. "

Lao Lin said excitedly, "You write this for me!"
So there is the present version with the inscription:
Breathe Cai Yong's "Qi is not full of interest"
Breathe Ou Yangxun's "peace and tranquility"
Breathe Wang Youjun's "Meaning before Writing"
Breathe Wen Zhiming's lower case, turn around in a thousand words, and it won't last long without chaos.
Breathe Wang Xizhi's perfection, Yan Zhenqing's opening and closing, Zhang Xuzhi's running, Huai Su's leaking.
Say nothing and breathe into the sky.
Hidden in the void that contains everything.
Finally say no.
After all, what you want to listen to is not a book, but just a voice that rings slowly in the void.
? "The calligrapher in history, Cai Yong's" Qi Wei Man Xi "in the Han Dynasty pays attention to breathing; Wang Xizhi's "meaning before writing" in the Jin Dynasty pays attention to the thought of calculating; In the Tang Dynasty, Ou Yangxun's "meditation" focused on clear mind.
My experience is that Cai, Wang and Ouyang talk about calligraphy, just as Zen scholars talk about Zen and Taoists talk about Taoism. It can be seen that calligraphy was used by the ancients, not just writing.
In the Ming Dynasty, Wen Zhiming wrote small letters, with many words and strokes, and was meticulous. "A thousand words go around without chaos, and one breath is long", which has a calm and certain atmosphere in the even and ordinary rhythm.
Yan Zhenqing's opening and closing talks about' Yan Ti'. Most people who teach children to learn block letters in China like to post Liu Gongquan's Liu Ti. Personally, I like Yan Zhenqing's openness, strength and vigor better than Xiujun in Liu Ti-li.
Zhang Xuzhi's Running to Huai Su is about two grass saints in the Tang Dynasty.
It is said that when Zhang Xu writes, he usually drinks too much and leaves in a hurry, doodling at random. After waking up, I don't know why. I suspect that it was made by a fairy and cannot be redeemed. "Zhang Dian" is a kind of wild grass, which was a must in Chang 'an in those days.
Huai Su is a monk who has lived in Changsha for a long time. He drinks and eats fish and writes crazily. It is said that there is an equally wild and unruly wild man in Chang 'an who intends to make friends. I didn't see Zhang Dian, but I saw Yan Zhenqing, who is known as the second cursive master in the world. Yan told Huai Su's pen to follow suit, and Mad Su replied: I realized it by watching the clouds in summer. Lu Gong's suggestion: What is a leak sign? In the old house, there is an earth wall with a grass roof on it. Once the rain leaks, the watermark on the earth wall seems to be gone, with traces and without traces. ) At present, Huai Su has suddenly realized the "Tibet front".
File its spirit, solve its disputes, and its light, with its dust. What Tao Te Ching says has always been the aspiration of China traditional literati. Yan Zhenqing's inspiration, like a house leaking in the rain, seems to be absent, introducing the "crazy element" into a more harmonious new world.
After Huai Su, there are some works handed down from the first stroke to the last stroke, which are profound and subtle.
Cai Yong, Wang Xizhi, Ou Yangxun, Yan Zhenqing, Zhang Xu, Huai Su and Wen Zhiming, who left a fortune in history, let me deeply understand that in fact, breathing and mood. The so-called inhalation and exhalation means breathing the energy of the universe and breathing the breath of everything. The so-called state of mind is nothing more than Zhou Zhuang's' not deliberately high' ...' being alone with heaven and earth' ... "

As far as music writing is concerned, "after Huang's experience, I suddenly feel that western style can't help." Because there is a very different time state and a very different time scale that inspires me. This different state of time and different time scales are boundless, which western music cannot understand.
I've never had a similar experience before. I feel that the gap between those two sounds is an endless ocean of time and space, a pure thing? ..... and the significance of the existence of those two voices seems to be just to remind me of the existence of that thing, that is, the existence of silence, the existence of a silent and invisible world. The relationship between silence and sound is reversed. Silence exists not to prove the value of sound, but to remind me of its existence. "

"In fact, after the running grass was written, it was based on calligraphy, but it has gone beyond calligraphy, writing about breathing, writing about people's breathing, writing about the breathing of everything, and writing about the breathing of heaven and earth. The overall structure is like the sky. The music of Running Grass is silent, wild and galloping, but the depths of all sounds are silent and invisible.
Just like waves in a flood, they eventually return to the flood, and sounds are generated in silence, and finally return to silence. This is the basic state of the "Silence" series. In contrast, I think Running Grass is the most relaxed, leisurely, open-minded, broad and lasting of all my works so far. Color is not different from emptiness, emptiness is not different from color, color is emptiness, emptiness is color. To paraphrase a passage from Heart Sutra, in Running Grass, sound and silence are the same, silence is simultaneous, silence is sound, and silence is harmony. "

The music of Running Grass uses a cello solo and three percussion instruments, which are divided into ten sections:
First, "Deep Breath", three percussion instruments and cello, are extremely slow, simple and quiet, with an extremely long silence, which is a metaphor for the breath of the universe.
Second, "silent", cello solo, extremely slow, extremely simple, extremely quiet, similar to meditation.
Three, "Little Thousand Characters", cello and Malimba, flowing, steady and smooth.
Four, "Deep Breath", three percussion players, extremely slow, extremely simple, extremely quiet, with a very long silence, metaphor for the breath of the universe.
5. Dream Pen, cello and three batters are extremely simple and quiet, and the music slides slowly, similar to the inaction of Indian classical music.
6. The percussion "Tuna" is extremely slow, simple and quiet, which is a metaphor for the breath of the universe.
Seven, "Drunk", cello and three percussion music, scurrying, drifting. This period of "drunkenness" is unrestrained and ups and downs.
Eight, "A Thousand Words", cello and three percussionists, flowing, carefree, wide open and closed, like a huge wave rushing.
Nine, "Deep Breath", three percussion and cello, extremely slow, extremely simple and quiet, extremely long silence, metaphor for the breath of the universe.
Ten, "inaction", cello solo, extremely slow, extremely simple, extremely quiet, similar to deep meditation.
"Zhuangzi has a saying:' There is great beauty in heaven and earth without talking about it, and there are laws in four seasons without talking about it, and everything has laws without talking about it.'
Now I ask you to forget' block letters',' cursive script' and' weeds'. Forget calligraphy, forget' background information'.
I suggest you breathe naturally, relax physically and mentally, and don't expect anything.
Listen to the natural sound, and the next body becomes sound. "
Thank you very much if you can see this.
Long Yuan Music's initial intention in making this record is simple:
Communicate the diversity of music, nourish the body and mind and their inner dialogue,
Breathing by Walking Grass can be said to be a work born in a natural state.
Music works presented in a very relaxed way,

At the same time, the sensitivity to sound can be improved,
Listening carefully is a kind of music practice.
It is also a dedication to beauty.
