When is it too late to learn calligraphy?

Calligraphy should be the unity of skill, cultivation and understanding.

Kungfu is practice. The ancients had the kungfu of "retreating the pen and turning it into a tomb" and "the pond water runs out of ink". Without practice, it is impossible to achieve success in calligraphy; but practice alone is not enough, and it can only become a calligraphy. Craftsman.

Cultivation is knowledge and insight beyond calligraphy. The ancients said, "Read thousands of books and travel thousands of miles." The skill outside the calligraphy is actually more important than the skill inside the word. To learn calligraphy, you need to master some knowledge beyond calligraphy, such as literature, history, philosophy, linguistics, etc. It is precisely the words that reflect the person. The so-called "golden and stone spirit", "book spirit", "charlatan spirit", "philanthropic spirit", "craftsman spirit", etc. in calligraphy are often the embodiment of skills beyond the characters.

Comprehension is also the key to learning calligraphy. Many subtleties in calligraphy are difficult to explain and can only be understood by yourself. For example, the ancients understood the brushwork after seeing the clouds moving, the composition after seeing the sword dancing, etc., and the farmer after seeing the movement of the sword. Dandan can also understand the structure of calligraphy. With the deepening of calligraphy learning, this understanding is improving.

Based on my personal experience, the power distribution of the above three points is not even. It is roughly in the following proportion: practice 30-40: cultivation 50-40: comprehension 20 is better.

Finally, the reason why calligraphy progresses so quickly is closely related to interest. The key is to find a copybook that you like - but it must be a recognized work.

I wish you success.
