The characteristics of Yan Zhenqing's works are: square and dense structure, horizontal and light strokes, vigorous brushwork, tall and straight, open and vigorous.
Yan Zhenqing's greatest contribution lies in introducing the strokes of seal script into regular script. We know that seal script is the source of calligraphy, and created a precedent for regular script with round strokes, which is completely different from Wang Xizhi's Fang Bi. The characteristics of regular script in Yan style are mainly reflected in "leaks" and "broken hairpin stocks", thus breaking the characteristics of the Wei and Jin Dynasties, replacing it with calm and round, and breaking the tradition at the same time.
Yan-style regular script is basically rich and dignified, and its brushwork is thick and vigorous. From his regular script, it seems that he wrote the grace and generosity of the prosperous Tang Dynasty. Although there were not many audiences at that time, it was highly praised in the Song Dynasty, and there is a saying that "all secular people learn Yan-script".
Yan Zhenqing has created a magnificent realm, with rigorous statutes and magnificent momentum, which can be said to be unprecedented. From the aesthetic point of view, Yan-style regular script has a masculine beauty, dignified beauty and so on. At the same time, his regular script is contrary to the calligraphy style of the early Tang Dynasty, and his writing style is mainly seal script, changing the previous thin and hard to vigorous and plump, and his structure is broad, magnificent and powerful.
