In the second year of Jiayou, Su Shi went to Beijing to take the exam, and the examiner was the famous Ouyang Xiu. Ouyang Xiu doesn't like empty and gorgeous sculptures. He likes simple and elegant style.
After the examination, Ouyang Xiu asked the poet Mei Yu Sheng to read the examination paper. Mei read an article entitled "On Copying Thick with Punishment Loyalty", saying that it has "Monk Style" and recommended it to Ouyang Xiu. Ouyang Xiu couldn't help admiring and marveling. This article is fluent in writing, full of loyalty to governing the country and thorough in insight, and it is a rare masterpiece. At this point, Ouyang Xiu felt sorry for the author and shouted, "Quick, quick, I want to avoid the road and let him out." It means that such a young genius really wants him to stand out from the crowd. From then on, the idiom "get ahead" came into being.
He thought this article was excellent, but he guessed that it might be written by Ceng Gong, Ceng Gong was Ouyang Xiu's favorite pupil, and Ouyang Xiu was no longer ranked first to avoid suspicion, so he fell to the second place. It was not until the list was published that Ouyang Xiu knew that the author of the article was Su Shi. Ouyang Xiu regretted knowing the truth. Later, in the communication, Su Shi didn't care about it, and he didn't care at all. Ouyang Xiu loved Su Shi more and accepted Su Shi as an apprentice.
There is also a much-told story in The Theory of Copying Thick with Loyalty. I don't know the source of the example of Yao and Yao's mutual restraint in criminal law cited by Ouyang Xiu in "On Rewarding Loyalty and Copying Thick Punishment". Su Shi met him and asked him. Su Shi smiled and said, "Of course." It turned out that he invented it to cheat the examiner, and Ouyang Xiu didn't mind. The actual cited example is from the Book of Rites, which is the situation of the Duke of Zhou. Su Shi mistook it for Yao when he was rushing for the exam.
A "take it for granted" is enough to show Su Shi's frankness, agility and sincerity. The phrase "take it for granted" did not attract any dissatisfaction from Ouyang Xiu, which also showed Ouyang Xiu's personality charm.
In this way, because of an article and Su Shi's talent, Su Shi and Ouyang Xiu became apprentices. Although there is not enough time together in the future, the mutual affection between them has not decreased, but the longer the time, the deeper the feelings.
In the second year of Yuanfeng in Song Shenzong, Su Shi moved from Xuzhou to Huzhou, passing through Yangzhou. This is his third visit to Pingshan Hall. Pingshan Hall is located in the northwest of Yangzhou, on the daming temple side. It was built by Ouyang Xiu when he was working in Yangzhou in the eighth year of Li Qing. That year, it has been nine years since Su Shi and his mentor Ouyang Xiu last met, and Ouyang Xiu has been dead for eight years. When Su Shi's political journey was not smooth and he was in a difficult situation, he revisited his old place and missed his teacher. He was filled with emotion and thoughts, so he wrote this poem "Xijiang Yuepingshan Hall", which is a model of respecting teachers and valuing morality.
Three times under the Pingshan Hall, a half-life break. I haven't seen an old fairy for ten years, and the dragon and snake fly up the wall.
If you want to hang an article, you can still sing the willow spring breeze. Needless to say, everything turns empty and dreams without turning your head.
The third time I came to the Pingshan Hall built by my teacher, I couldn't help but recall the past, but half my life passed quietly. This half-life just passed by in such a hurry, just a glance, as if it were a flick of a finger. Ten years, I haven't seen my teacher for ten years, but the ink on his wall is still like that, waving wildly, as if depicting the scene when the teacher inscribed.
Those words on the wall seem to show your thoughts and spirit in every stroke; A sentence is like a portrait of your teacher, which always reminds me of the first time I met you.
I'm here to mourn the satrap, my teacher Ouyang Xiu. Across the street came the song of "Spring Breeze of Willow", which is exactly what the teacher did. Everyone left, leaving only the poems they made for people to sing. I don't know, satrap. Can you still hear me? I don't know, teacher. Do you remember our past?
Bai Juyi said in his poem, "After a hundred years, everything will go up in smoke". I want to say, don't say that everything is empty after death, even living in the world is just a dream!
