The main building of the East Garden is a group of reading buildings with double eaves and pavilions retreating to the north end, with a span of 40 meters. There is a platform in front of the building, and there are four patios in the building. The overall shape is magnificent. There are three halls in the building, named "Chengqu Caotang" and "Reading Old Books Building", which are decorated with extraordinary furnishings.
Chengqu Caotang is a two-story hall with double eaves, facing the rockery of Huangshi and spanning the northern end of the East Garden. It is tall and spacious. Downstairs, there are three "Chengqu Caotang" hanging in the center, covering an area of about 70 square meters.
There is a cloister under the eaves in front of the hall, which connects things. In front of the cloister, there are palindromes hanging on the top, wooden railings under it, flower knots carved with rock peonies and square brick floors. Ouyuan is located in the northeast corner of the city, and the wall outside the park twists and turns, which complements the landscape, hence the name.
There are six long windows between the steps of Chengqu Caotang, and there are three rows of windows on the skirt between them. On the front steps of the Ming Dynasty, there are two gauze fans on both sides, and there is a sunflower-style Wan Chuan flying cover between the fans. The winged bat is carved with China's chin and Pisces.
The main room and the secondary room are separated by a skirt and a closed window. There are six long windows behind the two rooms, and there are wooden stairs behind the long windows for going upstairs. There are seven screen doors behind the bright room, and the window core is embedded with landscape banners, forming a landscape brocade. During the interval, 12 pieces of calligraphy were embedded in the inner window core.
The second-hand reading building is the upstairs of Chengqu Caotang, and it is the owner's old reading room. "Reading old books" comes from Tao Yuanming's poem: "I have plowed and planted, and I still studied when I was young." Expressed the yearning of the garden owner and his wife for the secluded life of reading and studying.
The second-hand bookstore has three floors, covering an area of about 70 square meters. The floor and folding in the building are all made of Chinese fir, with wooden lattice and half windows in the south, and the back of the studio is concave, with palindromes hanging on it. There are six wooden doors in the north of the east and west rooms for easy access. The eastern end of the building area protrudes slightly to the south, showing a curved ruler shape. The upper floor is called "Zhao Shuang Lou" and the lower floor is called "Huanyanzhai".
The double-illuminated building faces the window, facing south, and you can get double photos of the sun and the moon, which is a good place for the whole garden to enjoy the scenery. "Double Photo" is taken from the confessions of the king, monk and Confucian in the Jin Dynasty. It is valuable, and it is fake. "Photograph" means "bright" and "double photo" means that both the owner and his wife are from Ming Dow.
The floor of Zhao Shuang Building is square, and there is a shed on the top of the hill, covering an area of 65 square meters. The top of the building is a wooden ceiling recessed in the middle, with empty windows on the east, south and west sides, and a cedar board wall on the north. There is a passage in the west of the building, which is connected with the supplementary reading old books building. Because facing the window on three sides, you can see the light of the sun and the moon at the same time, which is also the meaning of double photo.
There are cloisters on both sides of Chengqu Caotang and "Cloud Gallery" in the east. There is a semi-pavilion in the corridor, and there is a tablet on the wall of the pavilion with the postscript of Shen Shi and his wife. This painting is very precious because it was written by Wang Wenzhi, a famous calligrapher in the early Qing Dynasty. Together with the original works of the host couple, we can see the preciousness of this monument.
Cloud Gallery is located on the east side of Dongyuan Garden, starting from the southeast entrance of Huanyanzhai downstairs, connecting Mingyue Pavilion in the south and ending at Wuai Pavilion. On the porch of the Moon Pavilion, there is a wooden square plaque with the title "Cloud Gallery". The promenade is accompanied by bushes, and Hsinchu is called "Cloud", hence the name Cloud Gallery.
Yun Gallery is a semi-gallery, built against the wall and about 30 meters long. There are five bends along the shape, six leaking windows, and a waterway under the porch connects the inside and outside of the park. In the gallery, the original "Lun Yuan Tu Bei" inscribed by the owner and his wife is preserved.
Yun Gallery and the opposite Bi Gallery become the opposite scenery. The corridor twists and turns to the south, connected with the moon-looking pavilion and the love pavilion, and there are bamboo bushes outside the corridor. Located at the northern end of Nanyun Gallery in Huanyan Village, Dongyuan, Wangyue Pavilion is a square building protruding westward from the Gallery, separated from the Ai Wu Pavilion at both ends of the Gallery.
Full Moon Pavilion is located at the top of the mountain, covering an area of about 7 square meters. There are harmonious windows on the south, west and north sides, and the lower part is a thin brick wall built on a stone foundation. In order to enjoy the beautiful moonlight in the moon pool, it was named.
Xiangchu Pavilion, located on the west side of Chengqu Caotang, is a flat house with double eaves, covering an area of about 20 square meters. It has walls in the east and west, skirts in the north and south, three rows of windows on it, one in the south and one in the north, the south gate is the entrance to and from the pavilion, and the north gate leads to the small room in the pavilion.
In the old days, it was the place where the descendants of the garden owner read and taught. The yard in front of the museum is full of osmanthus flowers. Every autumn season, sweet-scented osmanthus blooms and smells fragrant all over the house, hence the name. This is also a metaphor to encourage future generations to study hard and respect the name of the theme, which means that the moon will win the laurel next year.
Anle country is located next to the east room of Chengqu Caotang, and also in the northeast of Yanzhai. It is a quiet and comfortable place, with a single room area of about 40 square meters, with Chinese fir floors inside, Chinese fir boards on the west wall and the top, lower skirts and windows on the east and south sides, and low walls and half windows on the north.
There is a corridor in the south connected with the south corridor of Chengqu Caotang. If you turn east or south, you can go back to Yanzhai, but the corridor here is closed and you can't go in and out alone. A "happy country" means a comfortable nest and a comfortable living environment.
In the southeast of Anle County, to the north of Wang Yueting, Huanyanzhai extends eastward from Chengqu Caotang. Lent is elegantly decorated and is the study of the garden owner. According to the inscription and postscript of Yu Yue in Qing Dynasty, the master's great grandfather used an inkstone, which has been lost for a long time, and was later recovered by the master, so it was called "returning the inkstone".
Huanyanzhai covers an area of about 45 square meters. This house is divided into two rooms, north and south, with square brick floor and fir roof. The east and north walls are made of cedar boards, and there is a walkway leading to the blessed land outside the ginkgo wood fan on the west side. The floor cover and fan are beautifully carved. The south is the Hehe window, and the outside is the cloister, which extends southeast to the Moon Pavilion and northwest to the Chengqu Caotang.
Passing through the Chu Xiang Tang is the beech corridor, and a beech forest is planted outside the corridor. "osmanthus fragrans" means osmanthus fragrans. Above the starting point of the corridor, there is a brick titled "Bi Corridor". There are 19 leaking windows in the corridor and 10 bending windows, most of which are in the surrounding area of Chuxiangtang, corresponding to the cloud corridor on the east side of Dongyuan.
The south of Manglang is connected with the "rattan flower boat" and "no vulgar rhyme pavilion", and then twists and turns, passing through the Yuedongmen and the semi-pavilion, reaching the pavilion in the southeast corner of the park, with a total length of about 100 meter, making the whole park's buildings patchwork, continuous and seamless.
Bianjing Village is located at the end of the corridor in the southeast corner of the European Garden. Sitting east facing west, the area is about 40 square meters. Its east and south are walls, its north and west are railings, skirts and half a window with ice patterns, its floor is paved with square bricks, and there are two long windows in the south of the west for access. "Be quiet" means quiet, and "dense" means northeast, so it is called because the coupling garden is located in the northeast of Suzhou City. It is the place where the garden owner enters the quiet and realizes the Tao.
Then quietly on the floor is the listening building. Tingling Building is a pavilion-style building with double eaves, resting on the top of the mountain with a shed, covering an area of about 40 square meters. In addition to the corner, it is decorated with tapestry tiles, and its mountain flowers look like Dapeng spreading its wings and taking off. There are wooden lattice half windows on the north, east and west sides of the building, which can enjoy the scenery inside and outside the park respectively.
There are wooden stairs on the west side, leading to the "Kuixing Pavilion" on the west side. This building is located in the southeast corner of Dongyuan, near the moat and across the Loujiang River, where you can hear the sound of sculling, hence the name.
There is a pavilion road between Kuixing Pavilion and Tingling Building. Kuixingge is a pavilion with double eaves, and there is a shed at the top of the hill, covering an area of about 20 square meters. "Kuixing" is one of the 28 stars in ancient astronomy in China, commonly known as "Kuixing", the god who dominates the rise and fall of articles. In the past, scholars were places where garden owners were greatly revered and worshipped.
One corner of Kuixing Pavilion is decorated with double peony flowers, and the bottom is decorated with double peach patterns. It protrudes to the north of the corridor. The east, west and north sides of the ground floor are covered with wooden boards, and the windows are closed. The panes are made of ice, and the stair frame is attached to the wall of the corridor. There are half windows on the east and north sides of the pavilion, which can provide a view of the East Garden.
Wusu Yun Xuan is located at the westernmost end of the East, facing south across the sill from the low wall of the beech corridor, forming a courtyard of its own, which is the study of the old mistress. There are three spacious pavilions on the hard peak, covering an area of about 55 square meters, and the main roof serves as a canopy porch.
There is a porch in the north of the porch, and there is a fragrant porch on the top, hanging between the columns. Under the entrance, a flat Taihu stone is used as a stepping stone. The entrance leads to the East Garden in the east and the bar in the west.
There are four long windows in and out of the room, with half walls and closed windows with ice particles on them. On the brick wall on the east side of the Xuandian, there is a window in the shape of a begonia with a wooden Tian Zige in the middle and a swastika around it. Its outer wall is decorated with big brick walls, and the bricks on both sides of the window are engraved with official script couplets:
Couples in the garden;
The city bends to create a poetic city.
Banner: "Sleeping in the waves and hiding in the sky" was inscribed by Yan Yonghua, the wife of the owner Shen Bingcheng.
There are dozens of leaking windows on the gallery wall, which are different in shape and beautiful. Every room on the south side of the porch has a window, and the garden outside the window was originally a garden in the garden.
The landscape room is located at the southern end of Dongyuan Yuechi, just north of Kuixing Pavilion, facing Zhaoshuanglou across the water. North of the pavilion is a water pavilion, and there is a winding shed on the top of the hill to rest, which is transparent from north to south and surrounded by cloisters, covering an area of about 70 square meters. The cornices at the four corners are high and beautifully decorated. There are reliefs of "Songhe" and "Bailuyuan" on the two rest hills, and the corridor is surrounded by "Wu Wang".
On the south side of the exhibition hall, there is a large wood carving floor cover with a span of 4 meters and a height of 3 meters. The pattern of "Three Friends in the Cold Year" is carved on both sides of pine, bamboo and plum, which is beautifully carved and handed down as a relic of the Ming Dynasty and a treasure of Ouyuan Town.
There are three tulle fans in the north, engraved with peony and gourd patterns. "Landscape Room" is a plaque inscribed by Shen Quan, a bachelor of imperial academy in Qing Dynasty. Named after the mountains and rivers.
The West Garden is made of lake stones and stretches continuously. The main buildings are woven curtain old house, rectangular hall, library building, Heshou pavilion, square pavilion and so on. Among them, the study room of woven curtain old house is the center of the whole west garden, which is divided into three uninterrupted courtyards: east, south and north.
The old woven curtain house covers an area of about 165 square meters, with a hard roof and a tall roof truss. Doors, windows and windowsills are all made of good bricks. The house is a mandarin duck hall, which is divided into two parts: the front hall and the back hall by six screen doors and a flying hood.
The south hall of Yuanyang Hall has plenty of sunshine, which is commonly used in winter and spring, while the north hall is cooler without direct sunlight, which is commonly used in summer and autumn.
The roof of the house is a covered porch, the north and south long windows are all carved with ginkgo wood, the upper part is a Huiwen Palace, and the flower knot is carved with plum blossom-like components. On the east and west walls of the front hall, octagonal window frames with thin panes are erected. There are two large rectangular windows on the north wall of the back hall, and they are decorated with exquisite wood carving panes.
Weaving Curtains expresses the hermit life of weaving curtains and studying hard in the garden owner's ideal. There is a platform of about 30 square meters in the south of the woven curtain old house, and the second step in front of the platform is connected with the passage in the park.
Further south, there is a rockery with small and exquisite lakes and rocks, steep peaks and various cave paths. The trees in the mountains are strewn at random, and the ancient trees are towering. From a distance, you can see the East Garden Yellowstone rockery.
Shan Zhi South is a rectangular hall of Hu family. The rectangular hall faces south, near the garden wall. It is three rooms wide and covers an area of about 70 square meters. Because it is rectangular, it is commonly known as "rectangular hall".
The hall is small, but it is exquisitely built. There are long windows in the middle, north and south, and half windows between times. There is a hexagonal wooden window on the east and west side walls, and there is a square table under the window. Put a gold brick on the table, and a red wooden chair and some chairs between times. There is a small courtyard in front of the rectangular hall, with the west gate of Biot Garden.
There is also a wing in the northwest of the woven curtain old house as an auxiliary room for the woven curtain old house. To the east of the old house with woven curtains, there are three bungalows, one of which has a wing and the other has a wall door to the south. The corridor in front of the door is the square pavilion at the top of the mountain, facing south, adjacent to the woven curtain old house, with exquisite appearance and simple and light.
The square pavilion covers an area of about 30 square meters, so it is called "square pavilion" because of its square shape. The inner beam frame is exposed, which is a circular canopy porch. There is a wall in the north of the pavilion and eight long windows in the south. The upper part of the long window is a three-corner box pattern, and the lower part is a plain skirt. On the east and west sides, there are three rows of windows in the upper part and wooden railings and wooden walls in the lower part.
Pavilion East Gallery, with a half-pavilion at the top of Xieshan Mountain in the west, has the quantity of "Heshou Pavilion", built by the wall, located at the easternmost side of the West Garden, which is simple and elegant. There are brick windows on the gallery wall, which is rare in Suzhou gardens.
Heshouting is a rolling shed located at the top of the mountain, with exposed beams. It is a circular canopy pavilion with an area of about 20 square meters. The corridor connecting the north and the south is divided into three rooms, with eaves and columns, and the bright room is wide, which is convenient for entering and leaving the West Garden. There is a wooden railing between the north and the south with zigzag ornaments on it. There is an oval leaky window on the north and south sides of the wall, and the pattern is concentric double-ring brick carving like rotating water pattern.
When Shen Bingcheng was appointed as the magistrate of Zhenjiang, he got the Yi and Ming rubbings. Compared with the previous collections of Yi and Ming rubbings, Shen Bingcheng added the word "Shouhe" with a sketch of Wu in the Qing Dynasty on it, so it was named "Shouhe Pavilion".
There is a yard in the north of the "weaving curtain old house" and a library in the north of the yard. The host and his wife once wrote a poem, "thousands of books passed down from generation to generation, and two young people were old and broad-minded", which shows that they once collected a large number of books.
The library has two floors, with a building area of about 380 square meters. The east and west ends of the building protrude to the south, the west is a two-story auxiliary building with a plane near the square, the east is a corridor, which is long and narrow, and the lower floor is the aisle of Xiyuan. Form a concave shape with the main building. The upper layer is equipped with palindrome apron and half window, and the lower layer is equipped with long window and half window. The environment of the West Garden is elegant and quiet, with the characteristics of Suzhou Academy.
1884, Shen Bingcheng returned to other provinces with his family as an official. 1895, Shen Bingcheng went to Suzhou for treatment, but the treatment failed and he died in Ouyuan. Since then, the park has been in disrepair and scattered to residents' homes. The surviving lovers' garden was later rebuilt according to historical materials.
