Introduction

The Memorial Hall of Martyr Ahn Jung-gen, including the exhibition room of Martyr Ahn Jung-gen’s deeds, the sign of the location where Ahn Jung-gen shot Ito Hirobumi, etc., was funded and established by the Harbin Municipal Government and the Harbin Railway Bureau. The government and Harbin Railway Bureau are responsible for management.

The exterior wall restores the old appearance of Harbin Railway Station more than 100 years ago; at one end of the memorial hall, two floor-to-ceiling windows face the railway station platform. On the platform, two positions no more than five steps apart are marked, and hanging above "The place where Ahn Jung-geun shot and killed Ito Hirobumi". From launching the patriotic cultural enlightenment movement through running schools, to abandoning his pen and joining the army to join the anti-Japanese volunteer movement in Northeast China and the Russian Far East, the exhibition hall provides a detailed graphic display of An Jung-geun's family, personal experience, and the process of killing Ito Hirobumi. On the wall in the middle of the exhibition hall, there is a row of calligraphy printed with ink palm prints. This was written by An Zhonggen in prison. He cut off one joint of his ring finger on February 7, 1909, and vowed to "restore Korea's independence." The palm print of the severed finger was his unique seal, inscribed in calligraphy, and it still shocks people after hundreds of years of history.

Ahn Jung-geun was born in 1879 in Haeju, South Hwanghae Province, North Korea. He was a famous independence activist in the modern history of the Korean Peninsula. After the Sino-Japanese War of 1894, Japan accelerated its pace of invasion and annexation of the Korean Peninsula. An Zhonggen first launched a patriotic cultural enlightenment movement by running a school, and then abandoned his writing and joined the army. He joined the anti-Japanese volunteer movement in Northeast China and the Russian Far East. In October 1909, An Jung-geun shot and killed former Japanese Prime Minister, Privy Council Speaker, and the first "Korean Unification Supervisor" Ito Hirobumi at Harbin Railway Station. An Zhonggen was arrested at the scene and secretly executed by the Japanese occupation authorities in Lushun Prison in March of the following year.
