Shandong Jiaotong University was founded in 1956. In 2000, it was transferred from the Ministry of Transport to Shandong Province and implemented a management system established by the central and local governments. In 2011, it was approved by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council as a pilot unit for cultivating professional master’s degree graduate students.
In 2013, it was approved as the project construction unit of Shandong Province’s famous university for cultivating applied talents in higher education, and it is the strategic research unit of the Ministry of Education’s applied technology university reform pilot. In 2017, it was approved as a master's degree awarding project construction unit (Class A) in Shandong Province.

Historical evolution of Shandong Jiaotong University:
The college was founded in 1956 as the Jinan Automotive Mechanical School of the Ministry of Communications; in 1958, it was renamed It was Shandong Communications College; in 1962, it was renamed Jinan Communications College; in 1970, it was renamed local state-owned Jinan Weidong Machinery Factory.
In 1973, it was renamed Shandong Provincial Communications School; in 1980, it was renamed Jinan Communications School of the Ministry of Communications; in 1988, it was renamed Jinan Communications College of the Ministry of Communications; in 2002, Jinan Communications College and China The National Heavy Duty Truck Group Staff University merged to form Shandong Jiaotong University.
On July 19, 2005, the "Shandong Provincial People's Government's Reply on Approving the Merger of Shandong Water Transport School into Shandong Jiaotong University" approved the merger of Shandong Water Transport School into Shandong Jiaotong University and established Shandong Jiaotong University. Maritime College, and the establishment of Shandong Provincial Maritime School was also abolished.
In 2009, the Shandong Provincial Government approved it as an education and training base for shipbuilding and ocean engineering professionals in Shandong Province, and the Shandong Provincial Department of Education approved it as the first batch of postgraduate joint training base units in Shandong Province.
