Due to the establishment of the system of "Five Mountains and Ten Temples", monks who believe in Zen have received strong support from the government and enjoyed generous treatment. In order to show their elegant and noble social status, they often take articles as friends and express Zen with poems. They are keen to get in touch with China literature through Zen, but they seem to have lost their old piety and interest in "spreading Buddhism and Taoism". As a result, there has been a trend that "more Japanese monks take literature as the foundation and learn Taoism as the second time". This phenomenon became a habit, extending from "five mountains and ten temples" to "temples at the end of the forest", and then became the mainstream of Japanese literature at that time, known as "five mountains literature" in history.
