Shaoxing, also known as Kuaiji, Shanyin and Yuezhou, is a prefecture-level city under the jurisdiction of Zhejiang Province. It is located in the north-central part of Zhejiang Province and on the south bank of Hangzhou Bay. It is connected to Ningbo City in the east, Taizhou City and Jinhua City in the south, Hangzhou City in the west, and faces Jiaxing City across the Qiantang River in the north. As of February 18, 2023, the official website shows that Shaoxing City has 49 towns, 7 townships, 47 streets, 1,597 administrative villages, and 594 (community) residents' committees.
The coastline of Shaoxing City is 40 kilometers long, and the total land area as of 2022 is 8279.08 square kilometers. As of the end of 2022, the permanent population will be 5.353 million. Shaoxing has a history of about 9,000 years, starting from the Xiaohuangshan Culture in the middle of the Neolithic Age. In the second year of Yongchu in the Southern Song Dynasty (421), Kuaiji County was reestablished and Dongyangzhou was established. In February of the first year of the Republic of China (1912), the old system of government, state, and department was abolished and a two-level system of province and county was implemented. In May 1949, all of Shaoxing was liberated.
In June, it was set as the tenth college in Zhejiang Province. In September 1964, the Shaoxing Zone was reestablished. In May 1968, it was renamed Shaoxing Prefecture. In July 1983, Shaoxing Prefecture was abolished and Shaoxing City was established under provincial jurisdiction. It has tourist attractions such as Huancheng River and Xianglu Peak. It also frequently holds major festivals such as the Lu Xun Culture and Art Festival and the China Lanting Calligraphy Festival.
