Yang Chengwei was born in July 1953 in Nancheng Lane, Chengguan District, Lanzhou City, into a cadre family. His grandfather Yang Tongpu was the deputy director of the Gansu Provincial Bureau of Culture, the director of the Provincial Library, and a famous calligrapher. His father, Yang Shimei, is a famous Peking Opera performing artist in our province. Three generations of ancestors and grandchildren have made outstanding contributions to Gansu's cultural and artistic undertakings.
