Tang Lian's personality characteristics

Tang Lian's paintings are mainly landscapes, and there are also flower and bird figures. He learned from others, became his own family, and touched the landscape of Longyuan. He put forward five essentials in "On Painting Management": First, learn from famous teachers; Second, we should avoid vulgarity; Third, we should read the theories of the ancients; Fourth, we must understand; Fifth, learn from nature. His figure paintings are concentrated in "Yun Qi Mountain Painting Cloud Monument Collection". Tang Lian studied very hard, and often imitated the spirit of the ancients, "draw the ground when sitting, draw the quilt when lying, draw images of everything, and wear iron inkstones." He must write every day. This is the so-called "book class".

His students said, "He is over seventy years old, and he can be a fly for more than a thousand days. He is diligent and forgetful." His calligraphy is simple and elegant, vigorous and powerful. Regular script, running script and cursive script, "imitate Zhong Wang and take its essence"; Seal script "specializes in official script, simple", but more "chic and elegant". He is "especially good at Han Li, especially at small letters", and his calligraphy has a unique shape, which has the nickname of "juvenile style". He said: "learning books is not expensive, but the spirit of bones and muscles is still lacking." Has its own characteristics and style. On painting, he advocates that "the bones are clear and strange, and the brushwork is vivid." His painting "Xiao Temple in Autumn Mountain" is really full of antiques. The Map of Western jackdaw in the West of Ancient Wood has a strange tree body, messy and complete branches, simple and interesting, and there are dozens of them in Western jackdaw in the west. Other paintings are dotted with Yunshan, swinging freely, Tsinghua and Shui Mu, full of energy and interest. During Jiaqing period of Qing Dynasty, imperial academy praised his painting "The Picture of a Poetry Pit", saying that "the Yellow Crane Tower is empty in the eyes, and the water in the cave is in the heart".

In addition to fine calligraphy and painting, Tang Lian earned his own living by practicing medicine and selling medicines, "filling his hunger with meager food and studying in a farming nursery". He carved a stamp of "Cold Zhi Ming" and wrote "Song Shi Zhai Ji" and so on.
