The Historical Background of Deyue Building

"Deyue Building" was built in Jiajing period of Ming Dynasty, located at the mouth of Bantangyefang, Huqiu, Suzhou, and was built by Shengping Taishou, with a history of more than 400 years. Zhang Fengyi, a playwright in the Ming Dynasty, presented the poem "The Moon Tower" with a cloud: "There are screens painted on the seven-mile long embankment, wicker hanging vaguely on the balcony, mountain people sitting in different places, listening to the water intermittently, flowers flying across the bank, and passenger ships stopping in Gu Men, so I often get drunk as a mountain person, but I don't want to wake up when I lie down." Yefangbang, commonly known as Yefangbang, is located between Bantang Bridge and Puji Bridge, facing Tiger Hill across the river, with beautiful scenery. As you can imagine from Zhang Fengyi's poems, as early as 400 years ago, Deyue Building was already in full swing and famous in Wuzhong. With the change of history, the replacement of dynasties, or the relocation and annihilation, the ancient Deyue Tower has only become a record in history. Until the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty, many scholars still wrote poems praising Deyue Building. When Emperor Qianlong went down to the south of the Yangtze River, he once dined in Deyuelou, which was known as "the first restaurant in the world" for its delicious food.

"Deyue Building" was restored on April 25th, 1982, and moved to eunuch lane in guanqian subdistrict. The whole building is decorated with white tiles and upturned cornices, which is simple and elegant. The decoration in the building is separated by floor coverings, leaky windows, antique shelves and floor-to-ceiling windows, with a scene and a dense middle. In it, you can appreciate the style of Suzhou classical gardens. Its architectural features are distinctive and its layout is more original. Today's Deyue Building is located in the bustling city center of Suzhou. The whole building has white walls and tiles, and cornices are upturned. The three-character plaque "Deyuelou" was inscribed by Song Richang, former chairman of Shanghai Calligraphy Association. A flying dragon is shaped on both sides of the building, and the lace cornice on the back of the moire is exquisite and free and elegant. There is a half pavilion on the front wall, and a pair of colorful unicorns are hung upside down under the eaves of the half pavilion. The storefront is an octagonal portal with water mill bricks and a red painted copper ring. On this matter, Fei Xinwo, a famous calligrapher in Suzhou, wrote an inscription for the door couplet: "Wudi's famous chef is far and near Yue, and Qiong Lou's jade liquid is drunk and flies on the moon." The whole building was rated as one of the top ten buildings in Suzhou by 1986, and was made into a commemorative spark map of "Suzhou was built in 2500 years".
