For domestic people, the painter Xu Beihong is well known, but Chang Yu's name is little known. However, in the auction market, Chang Yu's and Xu Beihong's paintings can be described as leading the way, once alternately refreshing the auction record of oil paintings in China. In April last year, at Sotheby's Spring Auction in Hong Kong, Chang Yu's oil painting "Gentleman in the Flower" was sold for HK$ 2,865,438+2,000, which broke the auction record of China painters' oil paintings.
Chang Yu, a painter, experienced ups and downs all his life, and persisted in his own way in art. 1966 died in Paris because of a gas leak, and has been unknown and unappreciated so far. Today, the west recognizes him as a world-class painter.
Zhang Yu 190 1 was born in Nanchong, Sichuan, and his family was well-off when he was young. 19 19, Zhang Yu went to Paris by studying in France. He is familiar with Xu Beihong and Lin Fengmian, but Chang Yu's view of art is different from theirs. He didn't go to the Academy of Fine Arts for further study. He often painted while watching A Dream of Red Mansions, or played the violin in a cafe.
In 1930s, my brother died in Nanchong, Changyu. Unexpected changes, make Chang Yu from playboy instantly become penniless. He used to make pottery, make a living by supplementing art with business, and engage in sports promotion activities in Paris and Berlin, but he didn't achieve much. Chang Yu's economic situation deteriorated at the beginning of the 1938 European War and continued to hold exhibitions on a regular basis. In 1930s, French autumn salons and French independent salons, especially Tuileries Salon, had a high status in Europe.
In the late 1940s, Chang Yu stayed in new york for a year and a half, but his works failed to sell. He returned to Paris and continued to engage in artistic creation. Chang Yu's works were later selected for the French Independent Salon, but the response was mediocre. Life in Changyu has become more difficult and lonely. 1966 August 12 in the early morning, Chang Yu was found dead in his panas studio because of a gas leak.
Chang Yu's early paintings were not just nude creations. There are not many slim naked women in his works, but most of them are plump women. Even slim, slim and graceful women's bodies are full of fat and muscles, which makes them attractive.
Chang Yu's still life works are a mirror of his inner world. Most of the flowers in the painting are lonely and powerless, and the residual flowers are out of rhyme and magnificent. They are as lonely and helpless as a child who has lost his mother, which makes people feel sad.
Although Chang Yu is not well-known in China, he is being appreciated by more and more people in Taiwan Province, France and Europe. Chang Yu, a Franco Modigliani figure in China, was down and out before his death. When Chang Yu 1966 died in Paris, his works appeared in bundles in the auction market in Paris, and the price was only a few hundred francs. After the 1980s, the price of a leaflet has risen to tens of thousands of francs. The famous Paris galleries Sild Gallery and Oriental Gallery held two solo exhibitions of their works after Chang Yu's death, and their influence gradually expanded. The retrospective exhibition of Chang Yu's works held by Ji Mei Museum in Paris the year before last pushed Chang Yu's propaganda to a climax, and also made Chang Yu's influence in Europe wider and deeper.
In the 1940s, Chang Yu held a solo exhibition in Taiwan Province Province, and dozens of representative works arrived in Taiwan Province Province in advance. However, many of his representative works have remained in Taiwan Province Province, which has become an important proof that contemporary people understand the mental journey of this master painter.
In the 1980s, many art dealers in Taiwan Province Province became rich because of Chang Yu's legacy. Some even went to Paris to find the workers in the China restaurant downstairs where Chang Yu lived, all of whom were over 60 years old. After listening to their stories, the art dealer finally found the hastily buried tomb of Chang Yu in a poor cemetery in Paris.
The year when the art dealer went, it was also the time when Chang Yu's bones were about to be removed by the owner of the cemetery. The cemetery in Paris has a time limit. After Chang Yu died, his friends clubbed together to buy him a cemetery, which was the same year. Taiwan Province artists arrived in Paris at this time and bought another 20-year right to use Chang Yu cemetery, so that Chang Yu, who had been down and out all his life, could temporarily close his eyes for a while.

In the modern history of China, studying in France for work-study programs left a deep impression. In this movement, a French painter who traveled to France in the early days began to be recognized by the world painting circle and attracted the attention of his peers at home and abroad. He is Chang Yu, a lonely cultivator of modern painting in China. China studied in France in his early years and drifted abroad.
The evening scene is sad and lonely, pursuing spiritual freedom.
Speaking of Chang Yu, people can't help thinking of the word "bitter". Chang Yu's experience in Paris is very sad. Chang Yu, 190 1 (another 1900), is a native of Nanchong, Sichuan, China. His family was rich when he was young, and he showed extraordinary artistic talent when he was young. Encouraged by his father, he learned from the local calligrapher Zhao Xi the traditional paintings of China.
19 19 (1920, and 192 1) Changyu came to France by studying in France. He is familiar with Lin Fengmian and has many contacts with Xu Beihong and his wife. But unlike Lin Fengmian and Xu Beihong, Chang Yu did not take the initiative to go to the Academy of Fine Arts for further study. Instead, he embarked on another road of painting-he learned about the context of modern French painting from painting circles, galleries and Parisian life, and then engaged in artistic creation on this basis, and adhered to this concept all his life.
When Chang Yu first arrived in Paris, he and Xu Beihong, Zhang Daofan and others formed the "Tiangou Club" for China students. He usually likes wandering in the street, watching people passing by, drawing in cafes and occasionally playing the violin, all of which are related to his wandering personality.
1925, Chang Yu met a girl named Marcclle de la Hardrouyere in the big hut studio. Three years later, Chang Yu married her and broke up two years later. Chang Yu was single all his life.
In the late 1920s, it was said that a man named Henry-Pierre Roche liked his works and offered him a one-year annuity in exchange. Another composer friend also helped him hold many exhibitions in Holland, and Chang Yu's life may be passable.
193 1 year, my brother died in Changyu, Nanchong, and the economic situation also turned around. The unexpected changes made Chang Yu's life even more sad. He used to make pottery, make a living by supplementing art with business, and engage in sports promotion activities in Paris and Berlin, but he didn't achieve much. While trying to make a living, Chang Yu kept on painting. Judging from Chang Yu's painting style, he has never changed his personal creative thinking.
Chang Yu's economic situation deteriorated at the beginning of the 1938 European War and continued to hold exhibitions on a regular basis. In 1930s, he participated in French autumn salon and French independent salon, especially French Tuileries Salon, which had a high status in Europe. Chang Yu has a great influence in Paris. According to the old overseas Chinese in Paris, Chang Yu should have become famous by then, but Chang Yu failed to become famous in the end.
In the late 1940s, Chang Yu stayed in new york for a year and a half, but his works were not sold. He returned to Paris and continued to devote himself to artistic creation. Chang Yu's works were later selected for the French Independent Salon, but the response was mediocre. Life in Changyu has become more difficult and lonely.
1966 August 12 in the early morning, Changyu was found dead in his studio in panas because of a gas leak. Chang Yu spent his life in obscurity in Paris.
Regarding Chang Yu, Qian Zhixiang, the secretary of Mr. Li Shizeng, the founder of the work-study program in France, said: "Chang Yu's life in Paris is very difficult and precarious, but he has his own thoughts." Zhao Wuji, a famous French painter, commented: "I met Chang Yu after 1948 arrived in Paris. Chang Yu is an active person. He often complains that his paintings are not selling well. Chang Yu's rich painting forms and arbitrary brushstrokes, and the contrast of his colors and lines are used to express his wishes and thoughts. "
Mr Zhu Dequn said, "Chang Yu is my friend. He came to France with my teacher Lin Fengmian in the 1920s and 1930s. His paintings are very fashionable, tasteful and excellent. But now many people in China make his fake paintings, which should not be the case. Chang Yu deserves the attention of the world. "
During his stay in Paris, Chang Yu was poor, because his life was poor, and there were other reasons, such as unwillingness to deal with art dealers, unwilling to meet their nervous demands and paint according to their requirements. Therefore, Chang Yu achieved fame and fortune all his life. Chang Yu is a model of surrealism in modern painting art, and his life and artistic pursuit can be summed up in eight words: "Not secular, go your own way".
From nudity to scenery, Chang Yu's mental journey
Recently, the Oriental Ji Mei Museum held a retrospective exhibition of Chang Yu's life works, which exhibited many precious works of Chang Yu during his stay in France from 1920s to 1960s.
Chang Yu's paintings in the 1920s and 1930s were mostly nude. Oil painting, watercolor painting, ink painting and charcoal pen were mainly white and pink. His style of painting is free and easy, which makes people feel that Chang Yu is trying to break through the shackles of the traditional pattern while following the traditional techniques of China.
Chang Yu's female body works are abnormal from the perspective of nude painting. He expressed the scenery in his heart with the outline of naked women. There are not many slim naked women in Chang Yu's works, and most of them are plump women. Even slim, slim and ice-muscled women are full of fat and muscle, which has the charm of JASON ZHANG. The back female body in his paintings has unique characteristics. Some women in the painting look at people with one eye, thoughtful and embarrassed, and their brow is mixed with cold eyes and disdainful expressions. In other works, women's hair bun is the most eye-catching and self-conscious, which means that the author "doesn't talk to others and feels sad alone".
Chang Yu's still life works are a mirror of his inner world. The chrysanthemums, plum blossoms and lotus flowers in Chang Yu's paintings are mostly lonely and helpless, and the residual flowers are as lonely and helpless as children who have lost their mothers. Chang Yu's work "Chimonanthus praecox" in his later years, although there are flowers in bud, does not feel the proud affection that "the fragrance of plum blossoms comes from bitter cold". Another painting in his later years, "Branches in a vase", simply took a few bundles of dry branches and carefully observed the posture of the branches and the strong wind blowing. Since it is still life, where does the strong wind come from? "The waning moon with the autumn cold, cold and clear" makes people sad.
Chang Yu's landscape animal works are also very special in creativity and artistic conception: most of the paintings show the desolate scenes of vast land, ancient roads or yellow sand. In the boundless empty sky, there are only lonely animals as small as a drop in the ocean. Animals sometimes run, sometimes walk slowly, or meditate, or wander. Where are they going? Where are their hearts? Where is the township pass? All the audience felt the loneliness and sadness of this exotic wanderer in his later years.
Looking at many of Chang Yu's paintings, there are feelings of self-pity in nude paintings, desolation of Daiyu's buried flowers in still life paintings, desolation of tigers lying flat in animal paintings, and sweetness of Platonic spiritual love in landscape paintings. His paintings are soilless in flowers, waterless in fish, soft and boneless, slow and anxious, and sometimes ill, filled with the faint sadness in Chopin's Dance of Mazzuca, similar to the situation that Rachmaninov was far away from his hometown in his later years and could not be nourished by his hometown, but his tune was godless.
Chang Yu's works in his later years are both simple and unpretentious. The perfect technique contains the brand of the traditional painting of the old country, skillfully blends the colors and styles of Fauvism and Cubism, and reaches the realm of combining Chinese and Western, the unity of heaven and man, and the escape of soul.
In all Chang Yu's paintings, apart from loneliness and bitterness, people can also read a kind of human spirit, a kind of perseverance spirit that Beethoven believed: "The specialty of outstanding people is to endure silently in unfortunate and painful situations."
The pioneer of China tradition entering modern art and Jin Liang.
In the eyes of westerners, Chang Yu is a homeless man. The residual water-cooled smoke in old China did not bring any fragrance to Tianya people, but only brought desolation from behind. Chang Yu is rooted in the capital of art, drawing on the river of the capital of art, enjoying the fragrance of residual flowers, knowing how to be warm and cold, which is quite self-defeating.
Compared with Chang Yu, Lin Fengmian, Xu Beihong and others who stayed in France at the same time returned to the difficult motherland after working hard in a foreign land for several years, and made great efforts to plant irrigation, which made their influence more and more extensive and became increasingly important in the history of modern painting in China. In the 1940s and 1950s, artists humiliated by the French, such as Zhao Wuji and Zhu Dequn, also went through hardships in the West and made their own achievements and reputations.
Looking at the mental journey of artists who have traveled to France in the past century, although the background is 5,000 years of ancient China culture, due to objective historical conditions, the color of the background is dim and different.
Chang Yuyu died in Paris on 1966. His works appeared in bundles in the auction market in Paris, and the price was only a few hundred francs. After the 1980s, the price of a leaflet has risen to tens of thousands of francs. The famous Paris galleries Sild Gallery and Oriental Gallery held two solo exhibitions of their works after Chang Yu's death, and their influence gradually expanded. The recent retrospective exhibition of Chang Yu's works held by the Ji Mei Museum in Paris has pushed Chang Yu's propaganda to a climax and made Chang Yu's influence in Europe wider and deeper.
Chang Yu is a typical tragic figure among early French exiled painters. He is a Chinese Franco Modigliani. At the same time, he was a great painter who created freely for his own artistic beliefs and made great achievements. Time flies, pearls and jade are covered with dust, and we have the responsibility to wipe them off and give them jewelry. Changyu is an indelible oriental pearl.
