This is a poem by Yu Yue, a scholar in the Qing Dynasty. When ordinary people get old, they stay at home and talk happily about ghosts and ghosts when they have nothing to do, just to pass the time. It was a custom among scholars in the Qing Dynasty to record their conversations and evaluate them for verification. This led to the creation of note-taking novels, which became very popular. This is true for Ji Xiaolan's "Notes on Yuewei Thatched Cottage", Pu Songling's "Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio", and so is Yu Yue's "Notes on Youtai Immortal Hall". He said, "I am now sixty years old. The way of learning will become desolate every day; the things I write will soon be abandoned. The scholar has accumulated habits and cannot forget them all. I just remember the old news to occupy my spare time. "Notes of Youtai Immortal Hall" is a Qing Dynasty note novel written by Yu Yue. It has sixteen volumes and contains more than 600 anecdotes. The style of this book is modeled on Ji Yun's "Notes on Yuewei Thatched Cottage", so the content does not include "weird and bizarre things" such as ghosts and gods appearing. The author Yu Yue, whose courtesy name is Yinfu and whose name is Quyuan, is a scholar of the Qing Dynasty and a native of Deqing. He was a Jinshi of Daoguang and became a scholar of the Hanlin Academy. He moved to the Hanlin Academy of Xianfeng to edit and supervise academic affairs in Henan Province. He was impeached and returned to the people because of excessive examination questions. He lived in Suzhou and engaged in writing and lecturing for nearly 40 years. Mainly focusing on Confucian classics, it also includes studies of other scholars, history, exegesis, and even drama, poetry, novels, calligraphy, etc. It can be said to be broad and profound. There are many scholars at home and in Japan, Korea and other countries who look to him for study, and they respect him as the master of Pu Xue.

Yu Yue has high attainments in literature, classics, ancient philology and calligraphy. He is the great-grandfather of the modern poet Yu Pingbo. Zhang Taiyan, Wu Changshuo, and Japan's Inoue Chen Zheng all came from his family. In the 30th year of Daoguang reign of the Qing Dynasty, he ranked nineteenth in the imperial examination. There is another story here: Yu Yue entered the capital to take the imperial examination at the age of 30, and Zeng Guofan presided over the re-examination. The poem was titled "Small Smoke and Dry Rain and Falling Flowers in the Sky". Yu Jiu jumped out of the cliché of making a fuss about the sadness of "falling flowers" and answered, "Spring is still there when flowers fall." Zeng Guofan appreciated him deeply, ranked first in the imperial examination, and recommended him to Emperor Xianfeng. Yu Yue deeply felt Zeng Guofan's kindness in knowing him. Later, when he lived in Quyuan, Zeng Guofan handwritten a plaque with the words "Spring in the Hall".

"Notes of Youdai Xianguan" is a miscellany. Here are dozens of excerpts, published one after another, all of which involve cause and effect. As a typical Confucian scholar, Yu Yue is not a Buddhist, which makes these stories more objective and true.

This dog will not die, and that woman will not give birth

There is Shuinan Temple in Yushan County, Jiangxi Province, which is an ancient temple. There lived an old monk named Yueyin, who was over sixty years old. He chanted sutras indoors all day long without leaving home, and his moral conduct was very high. The old monk kept a dog. Whenever the old monk chanted sutras, the dog would go over and listen. As soon as the wooden fish sounded, the dog came over to listen to the scriptures wagging its tail. Everyone was surprised by this.

Later, the dog suddenly developed leprosy, its fur fell off, and there was a strong odor, but it never stopped listening to the sutras. One day, Monk Yueyin said to his disciples: "This dog is very annoying. Take it out and kill it." The disciples were all shocked and didn't understand what the old monk meant. Because Master is usually very serious, he doesn't dare to violate it. The disciples took the dog out to stop it from listening to the sutras. They really couldn't bear to kill it.

Three days later, the disciple did not notice and the dog went to listen to the scriptures again. The old monk saw it and asked in surprise: "Didn't you kill it? It's too late! It's too late!" He immediately asked the disciple to go to the next door. A family with a certain surname in the village asked. There was a woman in this family who was in labor and couldn't give birth to her child for three days. Her life was in danger at any time, and the doctor couldn't do anything. Monk Yueyin said, "If you don't have the heart to kill the dog, why don't you have the heart to let the mother die? If the dog doesn't die, the mother over there won't be able to give birth to a child." So he ordered his disciples to kill the dog immediately. I went to the mother's house again to inquire, and sure enough she gave birth to a baby, a boy.

The old monk said: "Because of the good results of listening to the sutra, this dog was born into a man, and he can be a minor official when he grows up. I can't see it, but you can see it."

When the boy grew up, he came to the temple often, and each time he came for a long time and refused to go back. Yueyin touched his head and said: "You haven't lost your good roots, but in this life you will If you haven't enjoyed the little wealth, don't come here again. ”

Later, when this man grew up, he became a minor official, and his family was also a middle-class family. In his later years, he often stayed in the temple. By this time, Yueyin had passed away for many years, and this man even repaired the antler for the old monk. The buildings in the temple were damaged, but they were often repaired and fertile land was purchased for the temple to live in.

The crazy monk

There was a monk in Zhuming Temple in Suzhou. He is disheveled, laughs too much, and looks stupid, so outsiders call him a crazy monk. He often goes without food for several days, and sometimes eats for several days in a day. In winter and summer, he wears a short cloth shirt and never changes it. He kept a black dog that followed him every morning. He would go out of the city and board the Maple Bridge, facing the west for a long time before returning. In the sleeves. Every vegetable shop he took from would sell three times more than usual, so people were happy to let him take it and would not ask him for money, and he would never give it to anyone who forced him to eat it. If he eats his own food, he will definitely give him money. Even if he doesn't want it, he will throw the money on the shop.

The crazy monk likes to laugh with children and give them everything in his sleeves. Sometimes people ask him but don't give it. No one knows what he means. He can still cure diseases. If a patient asks him to go, he will definitely go. If he doesn't go, it means that there is no cure for the disease. Suffering from tuberculosis, the doctors were helpless, so they invited the monk to go. When they arrived, the patient was dead. The stupid monk looked at it for a while, laughed, found a piece of paper and pen, and wrote: "One piece of Taishan stone, twenty flat peach kernels." Granules, a hibiscus tree, decocted in Yellow River water. "How to prepare such a prescription? When everyone was having trouble, the monk laughed again, took a fire and burned the prescription, mixed tea with paper ashes and poured it into the mouth of the deceased. After a while, the person was alive and the disease was cured. He treated other people's diseases. It's roughly the same. They drink the ashes and water together.

One day, when the sun was high, the monk didn't get up yet. He lay down at the window and smelled a strange fragrance. , went in and saw that he had passed away. When he lifted him up, he was as light as a cicada's wings.
