Xu Moran's artistic view

Xu Moran pursues the artistic thought of "serving the public". He believes that the highest state of art is "to suit both refined and popular tastes".

Mr. Xu Moran believes that painting is not just a technical problem, but a profound epiphany problem. He emphasized that excellent artists should be "familiar with astronomy, geography, folk customs, and be kind-hearted", "have eternal thoughts in their hearts, and have the potential of Wan Li under their wrists", so that their works can reflect profound cultural connotations and national spirit, and such works of art can enter the mind and life of viewers.

On Calligraphy

Xu Moran believes that if calligraphy is simple, it is just a pen and a piece of paper; If it is complicated, calligraphy is a kind of culture, and between the lines, it covers the education, thoughts and attitude towards life of scholars. Calligraphy and painting are of the same origin, and books are the basis of painting, so calligraphy is the starting point for artists' comprehensive cultivation. He emphasized that the expression of style of writing must serve the written content, and one style of writing cannot be used to write different content. Only when the style of calligraphy and the content of words complement each other can the unique artistic expression of calligraphy be reflected.

Chinese painting theory

Xu Moran believes that the so-called "painter, too." "Painting" means leaving the Tao, the Tao of all things in nature and the Tao of the painter's mind. "Hua" means turning the shape of everything into the bottom of the pen and the painter's feelings into the realm of art, so people who paint brilliantly present a realm of transformation. He believes that although the times are changing and the means of carrying art are changing, the "bookish spirit" of China's paintings and calligraphy and the philosophical thinking of China culture still need to be adhered to. Therefore, painters and calligraphers should seriously study the traditional culture of Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism, absorb the excellent ideological essence of China culture, make the accumulation of study and accomplishment the foundation of works of art, and let the bookish meaning and grace penetrate into paintings and calligraphy.

Xu Moran believes that from the external performance, painting is natural to me, and painting is the artistic expression of personality. From the internal performance, painting is a rich change in the painter's inner world and a change in his thoughts. How far is the thought, how far is the road to painting; How deep his thoughts are, how high his painting achievements may be. Therefore, the perspective of painting, the depth of thought and the breadth of vision are the three dimensions to comprehensively evaluate the artist's artistic achievements in painting.

On Western Painting

Xu Moran has always believed that China's oil paintings are not copies of European oil paintings, but "Western learning spreads to the east" and "foreign things serve China". China's oil painting should be rooted in China's traditional national culture, integrated with the essence of China's traditional culture, committed to the localization of oil painting, and express the freehand brushwork spirit in China's traditional painting.
