Chen Meixiang
Chen Meixiang was born in 1938 in Quanzhou, a famous historical and cultural city. This place has produced many famous calligraphers in history. Cai Xiang of "Su Huang Mi Cai" in the Song Dynasty served as a prefect in Quanzhou, and Zhang Ruitu of "Nan Zhang Beidong" of the Ming Dynasty was from Quanzhou. Adhering to the teachings of his strict father, Mei Xiang has been interested in calligraphy since he was a child. He often goes to Qingyuan Mountain, Kaiyuan Temple, Luoyang Bridge and other places of interest to view cliff carvings and joint plaques and steles of celebrities from past dynasties. He carefully studied the calligraphy art of famous calligraphers. He was influenced by his ears and eyes, studied hard and practiced hard, facing the wall and the pond, regardless of the cold or heat. A few years later, he finally became famous in his hometown for his good calligraphy. When I was a little older, I came to Xiamen, where I met the famous calligrapher Luo Dan and respected him as a disciple. Under Mr. Luo's advice, he accepted the teachings with an open mind and studied diligently. Finally, he won many awards in calligraphy competitions in Xiamen and emerged.

Meeting Bole
In 1961, Chen Meixiang, who was working in the Academic Affairs Office of Xiamen No. 1 Middle School, met "Bole". Mr. Chen Xianlu, the vice-principal in charge of teaching at the school at that time (the father of today’s State Councilor Chen Zhili), had a keen eye for recognizing talents, and guided Chen Meixiang, who was only 23 years old, to teach calligraphy for the whole school, which helped him later become a calligrapher. Writers and calligraphy educators provide good opportunities and open the door to success. Chen Meixiang realizes the heavy responsibility on his shoulders. In order to ensure the quality of teaching, he must continuously improve his calligraphy skills and theoretical level. He believes that calligraphy teaching should start with students practicing basic regular script and official script skills. So I chose regular script and official script as my main targets. In the early 1960s, in a small, damp house on Xinhua Road, Xiamen, a young man in his early twenties was still immersed in the pond until late at night after correcting a student's calligraphy homework. In the early morning, I heard chicken swinging again. This young man is Chen Meixiang. In this humble room, Chen Meixiang gave special tutoring to a group of top students who loved calligraphy. It was also in this humble room that Chen Meixiang often competed with friends in the calligraphy and painting circles on calligraphy skills. For seniors in the calligraphy and art world, Chen Meixiang always tries to seize every opportunity to ask for advice and listen to the teachings in person.

Xiamen Amateur Calligraphy School
In order to provide more calligraphy enthusiasts in the society with opportunities to learn and improve, in 1983, < /p>
Teacher Chen Meixiang participated in the founding of Xiamen Amateur Calligraphy School, and successively served as the academic director, executive vice principal, and coach. In the 20 years since its establishment, it has trained thousands of students. At the same time, Chen Meixiang was also invited to hold part-time positions at Xiamen University Overseas Education College, Xiamen University Art Education College, Lujiang University, Xiamen University for the Elderly, Xiamen TV University, Chinese Calligraphy and Painting Correspondence University Xiamen Branch, Minnan Buddhist College, Xiamen Shuangshi Middle School and other institutions Calligraphy teachers work tirelessly to cultivate more calligraphy talents, traveling back and forth and never getting tired of it. Writing a copybook is an arduous task that cannot be undertaken without a deep foundation of skills. Chen Meixiang faced the difficulties and devoted herself to the arduous work of writing copybooks with a high sense of responsibility and mission.
Writing copybooks
Using his spare time from teaching, he compiled "Students' Medium Regular script copybook", "Students' small regular script copybook", "Chinese regular script copybook", "Water script and large regular script copybook" "" and other seven types of copybooks were published by Fujian Education Press and Lujiang Press respectively. Among them, "Students' Chinese Regular Script Copybook" and "Students' Small Regular Script Copybook" have been listed as calligraphy textbooks for primary and secondary schools in the province. They have been reprinted many times and their circulation has exceeded one million copies.
Teaching and educating people
Liu Qian, the executive director of the Chinese Calligraphers Association, specially sent a letter of thanks to Chen Meixiang: "You have done this for middle school and primary school students.
Many helpful things, thank you.
"Professor Ying Chengyi of Fudan University said in the "Preface" written for Chen Meixiang's copybook: "Chen Meixiang is one of the outstanding calligraphers today. His calligraphy began in his early years and he has made profound achievements. In his prime, he was already famous overseas. In terms of his age, his achievements are as high as those of his predecessors. However, what people admire about you is not only your tireless self-study, but also your tirelessness in teaching others. Since you became famous in your career, you have carefully taught the students to you. , guiding young people, their number is too large to be counted. Anyone who has learned from him and listened to his face-to-face teachings and dictation has always had difficulty in understanding and comprehending deeply. After a short period of study, he has achieved remarkable results. Therefore, there are many people who are famous in their time. Broadly speaking, if we add the students who Chen Meixiang teaches at Xiamen No. 1 Middle School, Xiamen Amateur Calligraphy School, Xiamen University, Minnan Buddhist College and other institutions, plus those who learn calligraphy through his copybooks, textbooks, VCD discs and other channels, Even if they are considered his students, then Teacher Chen Meixiang can really be called "with students all over the world and disciples all over the five continents".
Retirement life
New things in "Jixiangzhai"
Teacher Chen Meixiang has retired. But in "Jixiangzhai", the busy figure of the old gardener still flashes, and his hearty laughter still echoes. Every time I visit "Jixiangzhai", I will meet Hong Kong disciples, Taiwanese disciples, overseas disciples, and even special disciples such as army generals and mayors who come to learn from me. There are endless new things happening. "Teacher Chen Meixiang has accepted a general disciple." After hearing this, the author immediately came to "Jixiangzhai". I saw an energetic old man in his 60s concentrating on practicing writing under the guidance of Teacher Chen. His name is Zhang Chengju, former deputy political commissar of the North Sea Fleet, with the rank of major general. In September of the year before last, he came to Xiamen to visit his daughter. General Zhang said that he was interested in calligraphy when he was in elementary school. After joining the army, he was busy with military affairs and could not take care of calligraphy practice. I really want to catch up on this lesson after I retire. This visit fulfilled my dream of learning calligraphy 50 years ago, and I was really happy. Chen Meixiang suggested that General Zhang should practice calligraphy while standing, which is beneficial to the movement of his arms and wrists. General Zhang insisted on standing and practicing calligraphy for three hours every day. After more than a month, General Zhang's calligraphy was perfect. Before leaving, teacher Chen Meixiang gave him a copybook and a CD that he had written. General Zhang said that he would visit Xiamen frequently in the future to renew his relationship as a teacher and student. Mr. Wang Zhenxiu, chairman of Fii Jewelry Store in Hong Kong, loves calligraphy. Although he is busy with business, he still takes time to practice calligraphy. Recommended by a friend, I found Teacher Chen Meixiang to learn calligraphy. I humbly asked for advice and laid a solid foundation for regular script. I have made great progress. His works are included in the "Selected Works of Members of the Hong Kong Fujian Painting and Calligraphy Research Association". Ke Zunhuai, the 16-year-old son of Mr. Ke Junheng, a member of the All-China Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese, permanent honorary president of the Hong Kong Overseas Chinese Association, and collector, is studying in the United States. Mr. Ke learned that the copybook published in Hong Kong was written by Chen Meixiang, so he used his summer vacation to take his son to Xiamen to study as a teacher. Although it only lasted for more than a month, this kid from a wealthy family in Hong Kong practiced hard and made rapid progress under the earnest guidance of teacher Chen Meixiang. Mr. Ke was very satisfied and said that he would send his children again next summer to continue seeking advice from Teacher Meixiang.
Going abroad to promote Chinese quintessence
Teacher Chen Meixiang is not only a calligrapher and calligraphy educator, but also a social activist whose mission is to promote Chinese quintessence. He used art as a link to establish a wide range of overseas calligraphy and calligraphy relationships. In October 1993, the Chinese Modern Culture Society and other units jointly awarded Mr. Chen Meixiang the "International Cultural Exchange Honor Award." In the United States, Chen Meixiang's calligraphy works were enshrined in the Chinese Museum of Chicago. A Chinese reporter who went to the United States to visit relatives wrote to Chen Meixiang: "Americans like your calligraphy very much. After Mr. Mason, the dean of the Yang Baihan Academy of Art, got your calligraphy, he was very happy for several days. He said that if he went to China , I must come to visit you." The book "Xiamen People" published in Southern California, USA, has a special page on the appreciation of the works of calligrapher Chen Meixiang and an introduction to his art as "One of the Southern Fujian Artists Series". Some Hong Kong compatriots who immigrated to the United States and Canada specially asked Chen Meixiang to write a small regular script "Zhu Xi Family Instructions" for them to educate future generations not to forget that they are descendants of Yan and Huang and descendants of the dragon.
In Japan, Chen Meixiang’s works were selected into the “52nd International Cultural Exchange Calligraphy and Painting Exhibition” and won the grand prize. Japan's "Calligraphy" magazine published a large section of his calligraphy works, and the Japan Calligraphy Alliance also gave high praise to Chen Meixiang's works. A famous computer company in Tokyo, Japan specially commissioned Mr. Chen Meixiang to write 6,800 commonly used Chinese characters in official script as a computer character library. What a heavy job this is! Based on the calculation of writing 12 Chinese characters on each piece of 16-karat rice paper, 6,800 words would need to be written on more than 500 such rice papers.
But thinking that this was a great opportunity to promote Chinese culture, Chen Meixiang readily agreed. He spent countless sleepless nights and finally delivered it on time. Today, these official scripts written by Chen Meixiang have spread throughout the world along with Japanese computer sales channels. After Chen Meixiang's works won the gold medal at the "International Exhibition of Chinese Yiyin Shenmo Poetry, Calligraphy and Painting" in the Philippines, the Philippine "World Journal", "Business Daily", and "Philippine Times" competed to open columns to promote Chen Meixiang's deeds and calligraphy works. Philippines The "Xuequn Literary Society" hired him as an academic consultant. Teacher Chen Meixiang visited Singapore twice to hold calligraphy exhibitions. His calligraphy works are very popular among Chinese in Singapore. The Singapore Calligraphers Association hired him as a reviewer, and he was invited to write the cover inscription and title page couplet for the 125th anniversary special issue of Singapore's Bao Chi Palace and Tan Clan Ancestral Hall: "To protect the people and express blessings, I feel grateful for God's grace. A child is thoughtful and repays his ancestors' virtues." In 1993, a review organization jointly composed of literary and artistic circles from China, the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan and other countries awarded Mr. Chen Meixiang the "World Art Celebrity" certificate in recognition of his outstanding contributions to cultural exchanges among countries around the world.
Cross-strait exchanges are based on matchmaking
As early as the late 1980s, a "cross-sea marriage" broke out in Xiamen that caused a sensation on both sides of the Taiwan Strait: Miss Taiwan Yang Lizhu and Xiamen young man Shi Jingming After meeting Ludao, they fell in love at first sight, and the wedding was scheduled to be held at Jinjiang Hotel in Xiamen. The couple asked Chen Meixiang for a wedding couplet. Chen Meixiang cleverly embedded the couple's names in the couplet to express congratulations, which won the praise of Taiwanese guests who came to the wedding. After this, many businessmen in Xiamen and Taiwan came to ask Mr. Chen to inscribe signs and plaques.
Taiwanese calligraphy and painting master Mr. Yu Chengyao was originally a lieutenant general of the Kuomintang and his ancestral home is Yongchun, Fujian. Every time I go back to my hometown to visit relatives, I always go to Xiamen to learn calligraphy skills with Chen Meixiang. Chen Meixiang gave Mr. Yu a painting of the nave of "The heart of a saint is the sun and the moon, and the benevolent lives the mountains and rivers." Mr. Yu gave back a frame of calligraphy: "The wind blows fiercely from the river, the sun tilts to the west, the sea roars, the mountains sing, and the trees stand together in smoke. There is nowhere to be seen." Bai Yuntian is outgoing and humble." Later, Yu Chengyao settled in Xiamen, and the two became "friends who have been together forever."
Mr. Yang Qiucheng, the president of the Calligraphy Society of Taipei Hongnan Commercial School, went sightseeing in Xiamen with a tour group. After many twists and turns, he found Mr. Chen Meixiang. The two hit it off and became close friends. Chen Meixiang wrote Lin Zexu's famous couplet on the spot: "A sea that accepts hundreds of rivers is great when it has tolerance; a thousand people standing on a wall without desires is strong" and presented it to Mr. Yang. Mr. Yang Qiucheng also wrote Li Bai's "To Wang Lun" in return for Mr. Chen Meixiang. In recent years, when Taiwan's calligraphy and painting circles hold events, Mr. Chen Meixiang will send his works to make friends through words and enhance friendship. In 1991, at the invitation of Mr. An Guojun, chairman of the Taiwan Oracle Bone Literature Society, Mr. Chen Meixiang wrote a piece of official script "Song of Righteousness" to participate in the "Exhibition of Famous Calligraphy and Painting Masters from Both Sides of the Taiwan Strait". Mr. Lin Xianliang in Taipei opened the "Jieshi Art Collection Store" and solicited works from Mr. Chen Meixiang. Chen Meixiang wrote more than 20 fans, banners, couplets, and naves in regular script, official script, running script, and seal script respectively.
The difficulty of writing pictures is the spirit
"Books are used to convey art and morality." Chen Meixiang's books are of good quality, and his character is also good.
Professor Yu Gang, a famous calligrapher, said: "I have been friends with Chen Meixiang for many years. He is sincere, modest and prudent. His diligent pursuit of calligraphy and his unremitting efforts in calligraphy education and popularization of calligraphy have greatly inspired me. They all made me admire and move. Mr. Wang Jiusan, a student of Chen Meixiang, a Hong Kong calligrapher and the honorary president of the Xiamen Poetry Society, told us about Teacher Chen’s virtues with admiration more than once. He said: “Teacher Chen’s calligraphy works have been praised many times. He took the award indifferently. When his friends or students have achievements, he always beams with joy and is particularly happy. He usually rides an old bicycle through the streets and is reluctant to take a taxi. And for his friends, he can spend hundreds or even thousands. He has become well-known in the calligraphy world, but for those who have some experience in calligraphy, regardless of their age, he is regarded as a teacher, and his humble demeanor is beyond words. "The walls of his studio "Jixiangzhai" never display his plaques and certificates, but are hung with the works of his students. Whenever a guest comes, he does not talk about himself, but introduces his work with relish. Students. As a calligraphy educator, reading and writing calligraphy is a daily task. I dare not slack off for a day. You can imagine how many noons and nights I have spent on calligraphy by strangers or parents who hope that their children will succeed. Teacher Chen treated everyone with courtesy at the door of his house and never turned anyone away.
A well-meaning friend advised him: "Nowadays, the commodity economy is being promoted, and you have such good skills, you should use them more." time to increase income.
You focus on teaching and educating people and writing posts. Who are you working hard for and who are you busy for? Chen Meixiang smiled calmly and said: "For students to win awards and produce good works, this is the best reward for me. This kind of reward cannot be compared with money." "As Chen Meixiang wrote in the poem "Reflections on Teachers' Day" in 1993:
In my thirty-year teaching career, I am so enamored that I don't care how thick my hair is.
The garden is full of peaches and plums. Comfort, write down the ink to express your gratitude.
There is something more precious than money, that is spirit. It is difficult to describe the spirit!
