Judging from the objects and documents of ancient Chinese characters that are constantly discovered at present, the running script originated from the branch of the Eastern Han Dynasty (which already contains the meaning of regular script). The font in the orthodox position in the Han Dynasty is a tablet-style official script similar to the ritual tablet. This kind of book with swallowtail is meticulous and decorative, but its writing speed is very slow. When people write some daily documents on bamboo slips and wooden slips, they use a relatively comparative writing method, that is, "bamboo slips" with the meaning of running script. The rapid writing of official script developed along different ideas, and at the same time, Cao Zhang and regular script came into being. At that time, the three calligraphy styles were primitive, interacting with each other. In the period of Emperor Huan of Han Dynasty and Ling Di, after finishing and perfecting by Liu Desheng and his student Zhong You, a new running script was finally created.
Running script produced many running script masters and different styles and schools in the development and evolution of the Eastern Jin Dynasty. If we divide it from the aesthetic style and pen characteristics of running script, it can be roughly summarized into three schools: one is the two-king running script school represented by Wang Xizhi and Wang Xianzhi in the Eastern Jin Dynasty; Second, the calligraphy school represented by Yan Zhenqing, a calligrapher in the Tang Dynasty; Thirdly, under the influence of epigraphy in Qing dynasty, Weibei school of calligraphy, or school of calligraphy of stele, tried to integrate the inscriptions. Among these three schools, the school of two kings has the greatest influence in the history of calligraphy, and the other two schools are influenced by the system of kings to varying degrees.
Wang Xizhi used running script to the fullest, and he combined the practicality and artistry of running script perfectly, creating the Southern School running script art with eternal light, which became the most influential one in the history of calligraphy. In the history of calligraphy in China, running script has shown great vitality since its appearance, and a large number of outstanding calligraphers such as Wang Xizhi, Wang Xianzhi, Yan Zhenqing and Mi Fei have emerged, leaving many precious calligraphy works.
